Stray starter wire? colors don't match diagram

   Hey guys i'm trying to track down my bouncing tach issue so i'm going over everything.  I have a stray wire coming off the main harness and with the length and position, it looks like it should be going to the starter.  
In the wiring diagram, the starter has the positive battery cable and three more wires; one Brown and two White.  My wires are the battery cable plus a red, a black and a white.  The stray wire is Brown which makes me more confident that it could be the Brown in the diagram going to the starter but i already have three wires as depicted in the diagram.  

I really dont want to fry any of the electrical on our one and only tractor so i thought i would take the better to be safe than sorry route and check here.  I included a picture to help give a better idea.  The wire that looks orange is actually red and the disconnected one that looks yellow is the brown one i'm talking about.  Just a little fading after 35 years.  I can take a picture of the wiring diagram if anyone would like to see it.

	Can you tell us where the other end of the wire goes?

	Here are some pictures of a 6080. It is a 1983 model. The white wire comes from the starter switch through the clutch and PTO switches to the solenoid terminal. The dark brown wire goes from the battery positive on the starter to one of the breakers on the firewall. The orange wire on the other breaker comes from the alternator output. The red wire then goes on to electrical after the breaker. You can see they have the output of both breakers tied together with a copper strip.

	Even though it is a different starter, gear reduction, the wiring should be the same.

	I just looked in the wiring diagram and that is the same as the pictures.

	Here is a blowup of the wiring diagram. I would unhook the wires and use a test light to find your solenoid wire first. Then you could either trace wires or use an ohmmeter to find out where the others are connected. Good luck.

	The damaged wire in the picture that you refer to as Brown is in my opinion the original white wire that would have come from the key switch and then passed through the safety switchs. Those tractors have a problem with voltage drop by the time it goes through the harness and those safety switchs. When this happens,the solenoid will just click when you try to start it. I would say that someone has added the red wire directly from the key switch to fix that. Will the engine crank over with the clutch up or the PTO engaged? Regardless, I don't anything there will have any effect on a bouncy tachometer.

	Oh man thanks for all the responses. Doug i can't really tell you where it goes because it heads in to the harness and i lose it. I havent investigated enough to trace it. LB you are, again, my hero. I have a late 83 so that should be the same. Your tractor is so much cleaner than mine; its great motivation for me to get some purple power and the garden hose out. Thanks for clearing that up. Lynn that was my first impression as well. I do have a white wire that is still white and i found a wire on the alternator that is supposed to be brown, but is the same yellow color as my stray. That let me to believe it was a faded brown. LB's post really helps clear it up for me though. Thanks all. I'll get the engine cleaned up and update if there are any changes.

	The end terminal was loose and overheated, hence the burned insulation. The usual fix is to cut the wire back to where the wire is still a nice copper color and butt splice on a new wire segment and end terminal. I'm betting he just disconnected the burned wire and replaced it with the red wire. No harm done. It's just that it confuses the next guy. Did he disconnect the wire at the other end?

	If you need to replace wires in that harness the terminals are Packard type 56.
