Grandpa put stp in everything. Does it really do any good? Just seems to be a thickiner for the oil. Why not just run a heavier oil? What do you guys think?

Use to use it in everything but my cycle. Seems to make oil sticker and cling longer to things. use it as a assembly lube on engies on rod and main bearing . Works best if you add with engine running and hot as mises faster with oil.
New oils I think are formulated better now than they were 10 or 15 years back ann new engines now again call for lightweight oils of 5/30 or 10/30 ..

And alot call for 0w-20 when running alot in below 0 temps.
STP is an anti-fricton additive that puts a thicker barrier between parts even when it's hot and looks thin. Similar to Lucas Oil Additive. I don't believe it can damage anything but then most oil companies so don't put any additives in their oil because thay say it can breakdown their oil faster. Who knows????? |

I am not sure about STP, but I know some oil additives have zinc phosphate which helps as a high pressure metal to metal lubricant. All oils used to have it but it brought catalytic converters a premature death, thus increasing emissions, so the EPA regulated it's use to only off-road and performance oriented applications. Run of the mill oils don't have the zinc. I'd check to see if it has the zinc.

I remember the TV ads. They dipped a straight screwdriver tip into oil and STP. Then they would try to pickup the screwdrivers by pinching them with their fingers. You can't hold onto the on with STP. I have on the lid of my toolbox a STP sticker given to me when as a kid. Our family got to tour the Indy Speedway, and our tour guide handed one some me.

Have not used STP in years in an engine. Rottela ,mobil 1, others work just fine without additives. But it still works good in older gearboxes [brushhogs] or finals that call for 90wt and 140wt. ,non posi rearends. Quiets them down if worn almost out..LOL.
I would not use it in any older tranny that shares oil with its hydraulics, like a B or C,etc. |
