Put in a new condenser, points, rotor, checked the fuel, seems to be no spark? Tried different plugs still no spark what is it? I'm stumped and I need to use this thing. Thanks Justin

Did you have this problem before you put in the new parts, or since? I'm just trying to determine if the problem existed before you did all the work, or if you installed something incorrectly.
Are you sure there's no spark? Take out the spark plugs, connect one or more spark plug wires to the spark plugs, ground out the base of the spark plug on the tractor and crank it over. You should see spark. If not, we can go from there and look at the ignition system.

I did try that could it be a coil? Does the positive on the coil go the the distributor or to ignition? Also would my plugs be gassy if I was getting fuel

Don't jump from one possible problem to another unless you elliminate it. First, make sure if you have spark or not. If you do, then start looking at a possible fuel problem.
Do you have a multimeter? It is a meter to measure electricity. If so, you can use that to see if you have spark in case you're doubting your spark plugs. If you don't have a multimeter, find a dry, usable spark plug and see if you have spark. There is another way, but it involves hanging on the wire end and getting zapped.
Once you determine if you have spark or not, then you can look at the fuel system if you do have spark.
If it has been converted to a 12 volt system, the wire to the coil should be the hot wire, meaning it should be hot from the positive side of the battery. If you don't have spark, you could take a jumper wire from the positive on the battery to the positive side of the coil and crank it over. That's the way we used to "hot wire" cars and trucks we didn't have a key for. Then we'd just jump the solenoid and it would run (Don't tell anyone I told you how to steal a car).

Well I tried getting spark by grounding it out but no luck and I tried more than one plugs to see if one was bad and I tried plugs on different cylinders still no spark. I'm puzzled

Did you clean the points before installing them? Sometimes points have oil on them to prevent rusting while in storage. Take a piece of emery cloth (or sandpaper), double it over, turn the engine over until the points close, then run the emery cloth up and down between the points to make good contact.
Also, make sure none of the wire ends, like those going to the points, are touching anything else, like grounding out on the base or sides of the distributor.
On occasion, I've seen where a new condensor was bad. But I'd check the other things first and, in desperation, try putting the old condensor back in.
You could have a bad coil, but usually I've seen them where they would quit after getting hot, not when everything was cold. But it could be. If it is, I replaced mine with a generic 12 volt coil from the automotive section of Farm and Fleet. I know people have said to use a resistor with a 12 volt coil, but I don't and it has worked just fine for many years. Edited by Goose - 02 Oct 2012 at 3:40pm |

Why keep making new posts? You can go back to the original post and update things from there. All the information you had in the last 2 or 3 post is not available for people to read here, so there is no way anybody can help. Yesterday you had spark, the post before that, you didn't have gas. You need to start with one thing and make it right. Forget what you thought was right and go through everything again.

I put a brand new set of points in a magneto not to long ago that was bad. How i figured that out? Good old trouble shooting. The points ohmed to ground all the time. realy couldn't see a problem with them but it was. Just changing parts solves nothing. Study the service manual, use an ohm meter, follow the path that the current flows, use the process of elimination.

Update: got it to fire and everything seems good but when I crank it its cranking hard now like something is binding it sounds like a 6 volt system even though itsv12 and never sounds this way or has done this

The distributor is held down by one or two clamps, locked with bolts that usually have 9/16" heads.
Loosen the bolt a little, then rotate the distributor just a smidgen... like... five degrees... and try cranking. If it gets worse, turn the distributor back to where you started, then turn it a smidgen past, and try again. Honestly, Justin- are you reading all the input you got in the previous threads you started? These machines aren't that complicated, but if you don't methodically go through and prove out each system, you'll continue this pattern of tail-chasing. Start with one system, stick with it, and don't move to ANY other aspect, until you've got definite proof that it's working. THEN move to the next. |

I know I've done that already but I mean I try to time it and an never find the fire mark on the fly wheel or anything I've tried rotating the distributor. Battery is good

Do you have a hand crank? Pull #1 plug and stick a piece of wire in there and turn it over until the piston is at the top of the cylinder and you should see the fire mark.

I fiddled with the distributor points condenser etc, then I made sure I was getting good fuel wich I was, next I made sure I was getting good spark after fixing the distributor, then I did what was told and put the piston on tdc and she fired right up I twisted the distributor to even it out and it ran great still seems to be starving a little for fuel, but I will check up on it and make sure it gets better an figure it out. Thanks again everyone I honestly couldn't do it withou your help!
