The starter on my WD45 has a problem. It eats springs on the bendix. I had a new one installed just last fall and it broke that one the other day. I don't use the WD but once in a while. The last spring was bent completely backwards. What would cause this? This one snapped close to the end. TIA  Ted

The only thing I can think of is incorrect timing: does she sometimes "kick back" while starting?  This is only a guess since I've nevewr experienced the problem myself.

I guess I would have to say "yes", it does sometimes kick back when starting.  I'll have to check the timing.  Thanks Brian.

Is the drive assy. the correct one?  Those types of drives were made in both clockwise and counterclockwise.  I can't remember which one is correct for the WD but I think you want it to "wind" the spring as it turns the engine to start, if it "un-winds" when the starter spins, the spring will not last long.
Edit:  I should explain why there was a clockwise and a counterclocwise.  If the starter is mounted behind the flywheel it needs to spin the opposite direction than if it was in front of the flywheel.  Ford used this kind of drive with the starter mounted forward of the flywheel.
