What's the difference between the Speed Maintainer and W patrol? How many of each were built? Weight? Horse Power Specs? etc? Thanks.

Why did they switch from the maintainer to the patrol? seems the maintainer was a better design?

Maintainer is just what the name is Maintainer, used to Maintain the streets and road sides .
W-Patrol Grader ,The grader with being longer have more down pressure and you could grade with it . I will have to check my lit. but it tells how much down pressure you had to be able to cut grades .
Just one reason of going to W-Patrol . Edited by Fred in Pa - 27 Dec 2011 at 10:49am |

Oh. Seems they would have use the narrow front on the Patrol as well to be able to cut a tighter turn?

The longer wheelbase of the patrol will do a much better job of grading, look at any modern road grader- the long wheelbase bridges the humps and holes like a wood- plane also with the front axle out a ways it reduces side thrust of blade when blade is at a angle.I built a small grader using a WD, lengthened the frame about 4', it works great on my driveway!!

The Patrol could put 4700 pounds of down pressure on the blade.

The question is, could it move while putting that much force on the blade? lol

I think the 4700 lb. number might be possible, but I would guess that traction would be severely compromised. My Patrol will move an amazing amount of ground, even with tired tires and an engine that's even further gone. She needs work, but if it gets restored, I won't want to use her, quite the quandry.....
