Im rebuilding a 15 ft WOODs Batwing.. probably an older 315.. Clutches are metal to metal. Bought new u-joints and getting new friction plates to rebuild the shaft / clutches.. Refaced the steel plates to be straight and smooth..
All i see on the internet is " adjust to the spec".... I did see one you-tube video that the guy said to tighten the bolts until the springs just start to touch or drag.. Then tighten 1.5 turns to compress the springs..... These are two friction plate clutches 6.3 inch OD and 3.8 inch ID ..... anybody got opinions on how to "adjust" the spring tension ?

I would have expected the spring to be compressed to a given height spec. So, in lieu of that 1 1/2 turns from the beginning of compression more sounds like a good place to start.

Paint a mark over all of the discs, and start at 1-1/2 turns, cut some tall stuff, check and see if the mark has been moved. Adjust as needed...

That sounds like a good plan... 1-1/2 to start, but VERIFY that it is holding... Thanks guys.
