Any ground that was hard pulling in. The idea was that with less surface of the moldboard the easier it would pull.

Slat bottoms made it possible for Dad and my Uncle to be able to pull 3 x 16's 70 series plows with WD-45's where 3 x 14's of a regular moldboard was the norm in our area.

The downside was they were fragile and stones could get stuck in em. They sure look neat on a restored plow.

Dad and I pulled a standard 3x16 plow behind a 45 in all types of dirt. I picked up a 3x16 slat bottom plow within tail wheel and gauge wheel. It was easier to pull. I never had a problem with broken slats, but I have seen them with broken slats.

Hi all the slat boards were used in sticky soil because they have lest area for the soil to stick to now day we have plastic boards which do not stick like steel boards use to. I can not wait for this covid thing to be over so we can get back to our ploughing matchs stay safe all

70 series worked best with the adjustable depth tire on the rear. Not a tail wheel that lifts, but a 15 inch car tire to control max depth.

I know, I couldn't stop it from going too deep. I was looking for a fixed gauge wheel but never found one before selling it.

NOT GOOD ON HARD GROUND...I hauled a really nice 80 series 3 pt with guage wheel. (with a new tire!!!) When they were loading, it slid off the forks, bounced across the trailer and rolled onto the ground. I walked around the trailer and except for the frame, the rest would fit in coffee cans....Now that's funny.....I don't care...Dale

Sorry to hear you had so much trouble with that plow. I have a few of the gauge wheel assembly’s . I always took them off, never liked them. It’s a long plow for the W series tractors. We pulled them with a 45 and remember once the depth was set the rear bottom would about drag on the ground when up in transport.
