My second Son now lives in Montgomery, Al and was asking about "maybe" I could send him some Roasted long green chili from Hatch, NM,,,,,? Well, I went to this farmer that brings in fresh picked chili from Hatch and he told me with all the recent rains in western part of State, the chili crop has taken off, and they cannot sell it fast enough and will prolly let it go to red. So I got a 30# bag and they roasted it for me for $28. Got it baggied up in HVY DTY freezer quart sized baggies and it in Freezer. I was thinking of getting some dry ice and getting a USPS "anything goes" box and send it 2 day guaranteed delivery....?
Anybody tried that with any success???

I've shipped hundreds of items over the past 20 years, never heard of an anything goes box. They do have a box for 2 day delivery. I'd put your stuff all inside a big freezer bag and put it in a big box, maybe stuff some packing material between it and the box. Your post office folks might be able to give better advice. I've never shipped a "cold" box before. Good luck with it. It would be interesting to get a follow up on this in case we have to ship something cold. Just got to thinking, one of the local butcher shops puts stuff in a Styrofoam cooler along with dry ice, seals it up good and ships it that way.

yeah a cooler, new , ship in IT'S box. That way it looks 'original', won't get damaged.
for faster service, write 'liver transplant' on the side..........

We went to Arizona from Michigan and used dry ice on frozen
meat. It was a three day trip and when we got there it was
still frozen.

Check with shipper first, dry ice may be regulated

Must be some rule now about shippin Co2 , after all it's regulated that humans produce more Co2 that plants can change into Oxygen , and that left over carbon is going to kill us all . ( Humor Intended )
Then shipping green house gas to the East - right on .
ODD THING there is a shortage of Co2 now and beer brewing in some areas is suffering from the shortage in being able to up the Co2 level in their brews to make the tase right .

I ship fresh sweetcorn from Central Illinois to friends in Chicago and a cousin in the state of Oregon, pick it fresh in the morning, box it up with 2 layers of husks on each ear, put it in a plastic trash bag to retain moisture, assemble in box to get in as many ears as possible and get it to the post office before lunch and no later than on a Wednesday for fear it would get detained in transit and have to hold out for the weekend. I get the large flat rate 2nd day boxes from the post office. No extra padding or bulk and the people receiving the corn say it shows up as good or better than you could buy at a store. Been doing it for 5 seasons now with great results. Usually get around 28 ears in a box depending on size of ears.

Well, Dirt Farmer,,I had to grin when ole Tom said he had never heard of a "everything goes" box from USPS,,,WinkWink The large "Flat Rate" boxes was what I was planning to use, BUT USPS has so many regs on using Dry Ice according to local USPS officials. "IF" you claim package has Dry Ice, it cannot be "sealed" as Dri Ice gives off a gas and can explode if gas is not allowed to dissapate,,,,? Who Knew??  I had originally thought bout using one of my good coolers, sealed up tight with Duck Tape as I remembered when we used to go to Mexico fishing, we would bring back (two day drive) several big coolers filled with frozen fillets that would arrive back home still frozen solid most cases.
 I'm liking your method,,,

Well, I went back to post office Saturday,  and the lady told me I will have to state that there "IS" dry ice in the box,,then there is a special tag that will go on the box right next to the "sender" and box will have to be "ventilated" so any gas inside can escape to prevent explosion,,,,?  I told her that vent defeats the purpose of Dry Ice,,!!!!   Chit,,,,I ain't gonna say nuttin and just let it go,,I'll prolly "forget" anyway,,,,,LOL
I'm thinking I'll buy a small cooler from Walmart and seal it with some good grade of Duct Tape and call it good. The USPS  "Large every thing goes box is a little small for the amount I want to send.

that dry ice will need to be vented,, if ya don't think so, take a small piece and put in a plastic water bottle, screw the lid on, ya might wanna stay back aways....

I'm sure the lable is for if its smoking, postal people know what it is,so they dont call the bomb squad...

A friend of mine worked as a haz mat tech for Airborne Express (pre-DHL).  He said that Airborne's largest shipper of Haz mat labeled items was RED LOBSTER.   They ship on dry ice, which was labeled/handled as hazardous.
This is due to dry ice/CO2 being an oxygen depleter, so it had to be stored in such a way as to not cause potential harm to the flight crews should there be an issue with it.

Hey Michael and Greg,,,almost exactly what USPS told me so now I know they wasn' t tryin to do a brandon on me,,,,,,,,,( Just to stay in the clear, I got a cousin named like that)WinkWink
I talked with Fed-Ex and  they have a 2 day gauranteed delivery,,actually a 1 1/2 day delivery for only $53 and is good as I owe Jeff and my wonderful Daughter in Law SOOo much for taking care of all the details for ordering and delivery and installation of my wife's headstone to her birth place in Belcourt, North Dakota.  She wanted to be close to her Mother. She is resting at the feet of her Mother.
I've just about decided to buy a medium sized cooler at walmart and fill it with frozen quart baggies of the Hatch Chili,,all of them wrapped and sealed in two layers of Hvy Duty plastic bags, then duck tape the lid shut. I believe it will be ok
OF COURSE,,,I just know ole Shammeless is planning  a reception fof them Fed-ex trks so that cooler won't have a chance of defrosting,,,,,Clap
