I saw on the old topic below that some wondered how to shift on the go with the Allis trans. Near impossible going up hill but down hill you can do it with practice. Dump the clutch, back off the throttle at the same time move the gear shift to neutral. Let out the clutch, then immediately down with the clutch and move the gear to the next taller gear. But you have to keep the tractor rolling for this to work, AND DON'T JAM IT! You can down shift by moving the throttle to idle after dumping the clutch, move the gear shift to neutral, let out clutch, rev the engine, down with the clutch again and slip into the next lower gear. This was called double clutching that all the old truck drivers were familiar with, me included. The problem with a tractor is that usually you're going so slow, that you don't have enough hands and arms and time to get it all done before you lose to much speed so you have to pick your places to do it. Clear as mud ain't it?

The old sliding gear transmitions like the B!C, And WD you could shift to road gear while rolling just push the clutch in pull out of gear wait about a second and slide into gear. Still a bad idea but they'll take a lot more abuse than the constant mesh trannys. Shifting on the go is what destroyed all the tractors that now pop out of gear.
