 Topic: Service/clean oil bath air cleaner

I've seen this subject here but can't find it now. Have a WD 45 and looked down the air cleaner intake and it's nasty. For the time being I've bypassed it by use of a K & N filter until I can get time to work on it in the off-season. Appreciate any tips. Thanks.

Take bottom cup off and soak entire air cleaner in bucket of gasoline, agitate once in a while until you are satisfied with the results. Alternatively the bottom retainer can be pulled off the center pipe and wire mesh taken out but it can be a job to get back in nice.

I pulled the mesh on my WD, not a bad job with air cleaner off but maybe I was just lucky.

The WD 45 bottom air cleaner mesh retainer is spot welded several places. you can drill through the welds remove the retainer and then pull out the mesh. you may find the lowest one very dirty. the other two not so much. Regards,

Other than having to repaint the entire air cleaner, an older friend of ours that has been working on tractors since he was a boy and learned from his father who also worked on tractors, he said if the mesh media cannot be pulled out, then soak in diesel fuel, then drain very well, then light it on fire. Afterwards you’ll have to soak it again to get the dirt and ash out but he said that’s what he has done. I’m going to try it on a B air cleaner today or tomorrow.

I throw mine in the local shop's hot tank. Comes back clean as a whistle inside and out. You have to repaint it after that ride!

Back in 40's to 50's Cat recommended to dealers to build soak tanks with circulation pump to keep the solvent moving. I believe Cats drawing are on the Antique Caterpillar Owners Club site,but Lord help you the way the search works. The one old Cat mechanic over there says do not pressure wash until after long soaking periods,as the dust can harden and be near impossible to get out. That would be time for the lighting it on fire I guess.

When I started working on a C years ago, the air filter was full of sawdust from working in the woods a lot. A 5 gallon pail and prolly 10 gallons total of gas and a lot of sloshing and soaking and sloshing, and finally got clean. It did work some loose paint free, but 90% is still there and it still matches the not original paint on the rest of the tractor. Its been a while, I think it took 3 rinses get it clean, but has been good ever since.
