All,

Does anyone know the SAE pattern bell housing size for the 3500A. ??  #1, #2 or #3 or something different.  I have been looking for the last two nights on the innerweb without much luck...

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Do you have a housing that you can measure or have an application you are looking for a specific size housing for?  There are probably a couple different housings based on what the engine was used in.  Generators are usually bigger than truck applications.

Maybe I am asking the wrong question...  What is the bolt pattern on the back of the block?  From your answer, I can assume that there are different bells that bolt to the back of the block.  And those different bells have different size (SAE pattern).  Is that correct?

Thanks,

Carl

Thanks,  I figured it out.  Will have to see what I have at that time.

I was thinking the housing was part of the block, not really, but like a part of the block that was the same in all situations.  Now I see there are many different sizes.

For simplicity sake, I will stick with what is on the engine as It comes with flywheel, ring gear and started that work together.

One I can measure, than I will know what SAE # and I can go with that.

Thanks,

Carl

I have a chart with the dimensions and mating flywheel sizes on my desktop computer. I'll post it up once finished with harvest tomorrow.

I have that chart or page in my folder on my computer.  Thanks for posting.

Like I said before, I haven't broken the engine from the alternator yet, but from what I read so-far, on some inner-web forums, they state the MEP 006A gen set is a SAE #1.  However, I have a cummins sitting open that is a #1 and the Allis looks a bit smaller.  I might be able to get an outside measurement that I may be able to guesstimate for now.

I would like the Allis to mate to a GM Turbo 400 transmission.

An Allison would probably be a lot easier, but I want no electronics, etc., and I no less than nothing about Allisons, but I can probably rebuilt a 400 in the dark..

Anyway,  we proceed,

Carl

Go Allison. Look for early 90s school bus with 6bt.  Simple cable hook up to inj pump is all it needs.

Now I am trying to find peak torque for the 3500A ???, which seams like unobtainable information.

The Allison MT-643 has a torque rating of 460.  Hp rating of 250, which would be perfect, in my opinion.

The innerweb is not like it used to be...  Back in the day, you had to try to go down the rabbit hole,  Just sayin,

Thanks,

Carl

426 torque question has been discussed before on here. This is a weblink to an older post.

I am 95% positive the housing is a SAE #1.  Rough measurement and its the same my Cummins, which I did measure as a #1.  Will have to wait to break it in half to see what size flywheel it has.

The bell housing # is the rear engine mount and though wide, it will work, especially if I can get the #1 bell to a automatic transmission.  I do know that they make #1 to #2 (#3 and #4 also) adapters, but then spacing would have to be addressed.

I did leave it outside closest to the shop door, so if I run out of things to do, I can fork it in and work on it, but most likely, and next summer project.

Thanks,

Carl

Do you still have that and what you might want for it?
