I know this is about seed, don't know where else to ask about it on this forum. Has anyone ever planted it. Did you broadcast it or drill it. I know about spraying just after it comes up and again in the fall. Was told there is lots of paper work with it. Reason I am thinking about using it -- I have a huge grass problem on 3.5 acres of good ground. It is trashy type grass that takes over every where. Plowed it deep last fall, destroyed the last 2 seedings. What brand of see did you use? Thanks Tom

I use conventional alfalfa. For most grass, SelectMaxx will knock it out. It wont kill broad leaf like dock, waterhemp, marestale, and so on. Some guys around me put down sencore around the 1st of march and that takes care weeds and grass for first 2 cuttings then they come back with the SelectMaxx.
As for seeding, i use a drill with a heavy log chain behind to cover up seed. It meters seed better, and provides an even stand. Then make a pass or two with a roller to make good seed to soil contact. If put down 20 to 22 pounds an acre if you want a good stand, this also helps on keeping weeds down. When i sowed my last field i think i had 10 total trips acrossed it. If you're sowing this spring, using RR alfalfa would give you more option on the weed pressure that comes in the spring and early summer. I normally sow in early to mid August. |

I've planted RR alfalfa since before it came out to the public. mine was a test field. was Fontenelle Hybrids seed. ($300 a bag at first) now it's around $400 a bag. I just prepared a seed bed, and the night before it was to rain, broadcasted it with a small ground driven seeder behind an ATV. sowed 10 acres. it came up really nice. only sprayed it when it needed it. usually just once in the spring. after several years, if it starts to thin down, let it go to seed and then go in and shred it. you'll have a nice thick stand again the next year!

When you get your stand monitor it for bugs, particularly alfalfa leaf beetle. The bug sticks it beak into the plant and sucks the sap, it injects a poison to make the sap run, and when you see yellow leaves it is almost to late! If you let them go without spraying they will ruin a stand very quickly!
I also monitored it after each cutting, and sprayed if needed........... Good luck!
