I have a few questions on the round balers which I should have asked first awhile ago.  I have been thinking about a baler that  has a monitor on it so I don't have to look back as much (had thought about putting a swivel seat in the old XT) and a bale kicker so I don't have to shift to back up.
And after pulling a couple 605F Vermeer balers over the years, (mostly our original baler from 1976), and countless thousands of bales through it in the last 45 years,

I kind of wanted a baler that was better.
Yesterday, I was at a consignment auction and I started the bidding thinking a baler was worth a lot more than their asking bid and a couple bids more, I, (gasp) owned some green paint that needs work. A JD 566 with twine tie and net-wrap and monitor...and NO Kicker. Worse, it's pto is 1000rpm, can't use it behind my old XT. NUTZ!  Well anyway it needs work on the main gear box, a new long belt, some chains and sprockets replaced, pickup header gone through, some tin work straightened,  and a whole big snarly mess of netwrap to be removed from three rollers.  Well thats what I have noticed so far.

Kinda late now to be asking what balers you guys like or favor, but will ask that question anyways, and what you think of a bale kicker on the round balers...? good/bad idea?
Okay, pro's an con's on this 566 baler too.

Think I better get an operator, shop repair, and a parts manual for this thing... The old Vermeer was pretty simple in comparison. Wink

That can be a good baler...if it is fixed up and running.

1. I would put a kicker on it. Local wrecker will have parts and its easy to do.

2. The pto can be changed to 540 just as easy. Either go to a wrecker for the pto shaft or just buy the end yolk from JD. Then you need to flip the gearbox around and you're set to go. Many people have done it!

3. Check the pickup very closely. There are cams on the outer edges that make the teeth turn in/out that can be worn out.

4. The rest is bearings, belts, chains and sprockets. Those are normal wear items.

5. One trick when using net wrap is to sprinkle baby powder on the rubber roller in the net wrap box when you start a new roll. Also remove any stuck net wrap anywhere in the baler. It has to be clean inside so it doesn't snag and tear the wrap.

I presently have the 568 but started with a 535.

I also ran a 605F for years and they were an excellent baler for their time. Assuming your 566 has a monitor it will store the total bale count since new providing it's the original monitor. Power it up and try to figure it out. The manuals you mentioned will be expensive if bought new from a DEERE dealer. A new belt about $250-300. Pretty sure it can be changed over to 540 PTO fairly easy. Chains and sprockets all available from DEERE just be sure NOT to use CHINA chain;DEERE is USA made. Hope you bought it cheap cause your going to spend a good bit fixing her up. Bale kickers work good on flat to gently rolling hills but not recommended on inclines where bales will roll off after ejecting unless you "pick a spot" to dump the bale. I'm sure after baling for years with the VERMEER you know what I'm talking about. When/IF you get the 566 fixed up and working correctly you will like it.

Stick with Vermeer. Built stronger than JD and other balers.
Vermeer 605K is an excellent baler and has a monitor.
The key thing to starting a bale is having GOOD pickup teeth.

Here is a link to the online JD parts catalog for the 566.
https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/navigation/equipment/78484/level/2/snp/OTIzNzY4OkNIQVBURVJbMTA2MTojQlVTSU5FU1NfUkVHSU9OLDMzMjg6I0NBVEFMT0csNzg0ODQ6RVFVSVBNRU5UXQ

You can download a pdf of the Operator's Manual at https://techpubs.deere.com/

Click on Equipment Publications.  On the next page do a model search for 566.  You should get 3 options to choose from based on serial number range.  Click on the range that matches yours and you should get a drop down showing the proper manuals publication numbers for your baler, format options, and prices.  After any component manuals listed, near the bottom of the list, you will find the operator's, parts, and technical (service) manuals listed.  click on the Operator's manual. At the right (above any prices) you should see a box with and arrow in it (view only) and the word download.  Click on download and it will open a free PDF of the manual you can download and save if you want.  Prices for all the manuals are there if you want to purchase any of them from the JD bookstore.  HTH

I have used a Vermeer 504G and a 504F. Both good balers. I currently use a New Holland 658. I did use a NH 654. I like the wide pickup and auto tie on the NH's. I do not have a monitor, but the alarm tells me when it starts to tie. The NH's start a bale easier in dry conditions and makes a better bale.

I have been running a Vermeer 605M with kicker and a monitor behind a DA7085FWA  on these hills for nearly ten years now, works OK, I like the wide pickup, but the kicker will not kick off the bale if there is even the slightest downhill slope, you must back up to level first!  Monitor works fine, you must have all good teeth and cams in the pickup, keep netwrap removed from rolls and pickup!!

My first round baler was a Vermeer 605F and I pulled it with a MF 275 tractor. Years later I brought a new John Deere 535 baler. The JD 535 was a lot easier baler to run and it started a bale a lot easier too.

I have only owned Hesston.  Currently have a 856A.  I have ran neighbors baler many times for some custom work that he couldn't get too.  Vermeer M baler he had.  Once I had it on my white 105 and had to go change out tractors to my 8030. I couldn't keep the radiator cool with the AC on and it pushed me around everywhere.  Made beautiful bales and net wrap so much quicker.  So for your XT keep that in mind on size of baler it can handle. I had the power, just not enough weight and probably needed the radiator to be perfect.  He also had a Vermeer dealership at one time and helped him out a few times.  My opinion, JD and Hesston were similar in make.  Vermeer was heavier but not sure I'm comparing apples to apples for model and years.  As my only experience was a M baler. I am currently going thru our Hesston.  New belts, chains and pick-up teeth.  I did the starter flaps last year.

When I first moved here we had a guy bale hay with a 535 baler. He traded that for a 566. What a jump up in quality the 566 was. Heavier and tighter bales. When you get that puppy going, I think you will like it. They will make a real heavy bale. Make sure you've got enough tractor to move them. I was always looking for a fat gal to sit on the radiator cap till l got the 200.
