Anyone using the new Rotella 30 SAE oil that Walmart is now selling. Specifically designed for older diesel tractors turbo and non turbo? Sounds like just what I need in my 160 as it calls for straight 30 weight. Need to research it to make sure it contains the higher zinc level for the cam.

Can't get any flavor of Rotella from Sam's club, Tractor Supply, Rural King or any other discount store in this area. Some high end retail stores have it for $25.00 a gallon.

Your mighty "One-Sixty" calls for SAE 30 wt diesel oil because 15W-40 hadn't been invented yet. They never re-write the owners manuals. Modern day 15W-40 would be just fine as long as the zinc levels are over 1,000 PPM for flat tappet camshaft engines.

That’s a good point Dr, I’m getting ready to change out the break in oil after the complete engine overhaul. Trying to figure out the best oil for it. I use the Rotella 15W-40 T4 in my 190XT. Wish the zinc levels were on the container.

I have been using John Deere 15w-40 in my farm equipment, for years. JD 4050, D-17 gas, 180 diesel, CII combine propane. Seems to work just fine.

But as every one is saying you don't want the NEW FORMULA that is made to not clog the clean air add on stuff. I say any brand you have used for years will be ok, as long as it is not the NEW clean air DEF compatible. But Rotella has 2 maybe 3 different formulas.
 If you pull the stick and there is nothing on it  and you just have to start it.  I beat the new stuff would be much better than none. But if you got old machinery, you need to keep a few things around. So take time know what the S A E grades are besides 30wt or 10-40wt but the capital letters in the circle.

Rotella 15w-40 and 10w-30 are still 1000 ppm zinc phos last I checked. Motorcraft super duty 15/40 and 10/30 are as well. Delo and Delvac are low (800 ppm) zinc/phos.Most diesel oils carrying both ck4 and sn api service ratings are low zin/phos witch aren't good for old flat tappet engines.BUYER BEWARE and do your homework before you buy.Most brands product data sheets can be found online. Another good source of information is Petroleum Quality Institute of America. http://pqia.org/

Rotella T 15W-40 T4 has 1200 ppm zinc, so I will stick to with that. I use it in my 5.9 Cummins in my Ram truck and my 190XT. Thanks for the input everyone, was interesting seeing the Rotella in a 30 SAE and was curious to everyone’s input.

Rotella 30 SAE is (low) zinc/phos 800 ppm, not a good option for flat tappet.This was told to me straight from the folks at shell.

I've seen the Shell Rotella 15w40 and 10w30 at Menards, TSC and Orscheln locally. Menards usually has the best price. As of lately, they seem to have been running short of it. I suppose supply side issues.

Am I right thinking my gas D 15 engine needs a high zinc oil ? Last oil change I used TSC 10W40 . Don't see anything about zinc % online . THANKS !

Zinc (or lack thereof) is not a concern for slow tractor engines with relatively low valve spring pressures…

Local tractor mechanic guy recommended Rotella 15w40 for even my gas tractors. I never switched my '45 to that, but rather use Rotella 10w30 in it. It turns over slow enough in the winter with the six volt system!

I had an elderly neighbor that always told me any oil is better than no oil... he also lived by check the oil and the water you will know when your outa gas!!!

On some of my old Cat's if there is fresh oil leaking on the final drive  they have oil good to go.

Don(MO) was posting a few years ago that we was seeing gas AC tractors wiht worn cams. Likely because of low Zinc levels. I think it's important for gas to. Don was one of the best.

I also had a mechanic say that one of my vehicles needed/would benefit from the oil with zinc in it. He suggested using the rotella 10w30 in the car. Maybe zinc does have a benefit for the gas engines, also.

the problem with using oils that have high ZINC in them in NEW CARS is that the zinc will destroy the catalytic converter.......... Oil blowby is burn off thru the PCV system into the exhaust.
