D-17 Roosa Master has never been touched , obviously it is time for a rebuild, I know that  the injectors have never been touched also, so , we are thinking about having the local AGCO dealer do the work.  What else do we need to have looked at, and roughly how much to have repaired ???

most implement dealers send fuel system work out to a fuel pump shop like I work at. I do pumps for several Agco dealers.

i do not know what ed charges but the injectors, if they have never been touched, put new tips in them, thats what we do , i think the tips from agco are abot 65.00 apeace. and the pump, i dont know what ed charges but usually around 600.00 to go through depending on what is wrong and what needs to be replaced, thats what our fuel shop charged us.

Those are fairly easy to install. Just thoroughly clean the entire area so you keep dirt out. I found that a 9/16 flexible ratcheting endwrench worked fairly well putting the lines on. When you slide the pump on the shaft, (the shaft will stay in the engine) be gentle so you don't roll the shaft seal over. It's a pair of umbrella type seals.

DB pumps generally run around $500 around here, unless in real poor shape. injectors can be dis-assembled and cleaned, new nozzles if needed, then re-set to spec. you are probably a little far for me to come put it on though. LOL! Ed.

Ed, I looked up Walnut on google to see how far away you are from us a couple weeks ago, and, yes, you are plenty far away ! We are about 15 to 20 miles due east of St. Louis  ( 55 and route 4 ). I have never even seen one taken apart, and, do not want to mess this one up as it still runs pretty good, but, it has it's bad days, its due !!!

Surely there is someone local that could do the R & R for you, maybe after hours but would still give you a quality job and the satisfaction of seeing the work done. Check around, there are plenty of guys probably that would fit the bill. The task is not nearly as bad as you think, just that there are somethings that need doing right the first time.

Often a liberal application of "barley pop" wil get a heck of a lot of stuff done!!!! Check out my signature on my posts  and you will understand!!!

I have a motto that I tell the new guys at work, " You never learn anything by watching- you learn by doing !!!  .  I guess I need to start looking up some info on the web, get a better handle on the situation.

If you don't want to go to the AGCO dealer, call Niel Evans at Northside Salvage in Red Bud, IL.  Pretty close to you in the south side of the Metro East.  They specialize in restoring AC's and have restored D17's before.  Also have their own AC & Gleaner salvage yard.  They wouldn't do the internal pump work themselves but could do the rest no problem.  If they don't have a specific diesel pump shop they work with locally you could have them send it to Ed! 618-282-2455 or 618-282-2477.  Mike

thanks for the kind words guys! I could talk you through the removal and re-installation if you are fairly handy with some basic tools. A very straight forward job. once tractor is cleaned off and parked in a safe location to sit a few days, shut off fuel tank valve. Take rectangular cover off side of pump(2 screws)turn engine by hand slowly until timing line comes into window and lines up with stationary line. now it's a matter of disconnecting linkage/cables, and fuel lines, and then removing pump. Very important not to turn engine until pump is back on. See, that wasn't hard. re-install by reversing the procedure, taking much care in working the first umbrella seal into pilot tube of pump(new seals come in rebuild kit) injectors are even easier to remove. pm me if interested. Ed.

How much is a rebuild kit for a 180 with a Roosa Master injection pump?  What is the part number of the rebuild kit?
I have the rebuild manual.

a seal kit is # 24371, retails around $35. But, you wouldn't overhaul an engine with just a gasket set. A pilot tube and shut off cam for sure, maybe delivery valve, spring, metering valve & arm, transfer pump liner and blades, weight retainer if pins are beat badly. good luck, Ed.

Thanks Ed.  Great starting point.  Who knows what one will find until the patient is opened up.

Have been at the farm all afternoon brush hogging, finally got to machine shed late, we checked out the pump, and, what we need to do to remove, tomorrow, when there is " day light " , 2 injectors have been leaking since I can remember,  Ed, if we remove an injector, will it need a new " seal " , gasket since it was removed for inspection ???  It seems pretty self evident  how  the removal will  transpire. What would a " toasted"  injector look like ?  They would be replaced  along with the pump rebuild naturally .

yes, the compression gasket should only be used once. I dont automatically replace injector nozzles, alot of times they can be dis-assembled, cleaned, lapped, then re-assembled and set. you will see the tips be covered in carbon, but that doesn't mean they are toasted.

Don't use any metal tools of any kind to remove carbon from the tips of the injectors. There is a pintle that sticks through and you can damage it easily. The manual says to use wood to remove any carbon. I used carb cleaner on a cloth rag to dissolve the carbon on mine.

I soak the nozzles in carb cleaner dip, then if really nasty still they go into the ultrasonic cleaner. then some magic time with the lapping, and re-assemble. Adjust as needed, and enjoy!

I got lucky I guess. All mine needed was the pressure raised. The shop that checked them said the opening pressure was 1700 to 1800 before. Spray pattern was very good so he bumped them up to 2000.

Saturday Update, called the AGCO dealer this morning to price injectors,....$115 each, not gonna happen x's 6, not the problem anyway. How much are injector gaskets ? as 2 have leaked as far back as I can remember, and , injectors need to be removed for inspection, could not quote a price, but, referred me to Dietrich in Nashville or Carlinville  Hydraulics, both here in Illinois. So, to make a long story short, need to order injector gaskets this week as to fix the 2 that are leaking, and, do a visual inspection on the other 4 !!!
