I was reading though my (new to me) D17 service manual, and there are references to some front wheel hub parts that are not used on "roll shift" front end tractors. I also see "roll shift" referenced for various front end parts on the internet. I've done the usual searches and came up empty. What is a "roll shift" front end, and what is different about it? The "roll shift" front axle allows adjustment of the front wheel tread width without jacking the tractor.
If you can access the you-tube video in this link, you will see a demonstration at about 25 minutes. |

It was another ingenious idea from Allis Chalmers.

It is used to adjust a wide front axle. Not as easy as it sounds, you need to be able to move the axle and the tie rod. If they have not been cared for, it will be an interesting experience!

I thought you needed to drop a half inch bolt in to the steering arm at the wheel you were adjusting ? ............................................................ Actually you use the outer Axle Bolt that needs to be removed in order to change the Tread Width. Edited by Gary - 29 Dec 2020 at 10:43am |

Oh, thanks. I've seen that video before, but never watched the whole thing. My D17 has the Power Shift rears, but not the roll shift front end.

GStrom Does your D-17 not have the adjustable Wide Front End ? I have an Allis original Operators Instruction Manual for D-17 (printed 1960) On page 20 it describes how to adjust the Front Wheel Tread Width using the Roll Shift Front Axle. G |

My wide front IS adjustable, but it has individual bolt holes instead of the long slot in the "roll shift" version.

Don't think slots would matter....it's the steering arm configuration that makes it possible.

I think that may be an early D-14 Axle if there is no slot. G |

Non power steering models, optional until about 1959, do not have roll shift. My D17 doesn't have roll shift. I don't think it has the holes in the steering arms.
