While at the GOTO last week, it was with great sadness that I heard about the passing of fellow Orange lover Roger VanCamp. I hadn’t heard of his passing before now. I met Roger many years ago at one of the first GOTO’s that I got to attend. If you knew Roger, you knew it took a moment to break through that gruff ole man exterior to find a very nice, very knowledgeable man. I came to look forward to our talks in the afternoon shade as the shows would wind down for the evening. He would tell all in earshot of his time in the Navy, all his time riding his beloved trains, and everything he knew about Allis tractors. He even drove from Ft. Wayne to Gadsden,AL for the G Roundup every year with his fateful sidekick Jim until his health caught up with him and he missed the last two years. Roger, I’m gonna miss ya sir. Maybe we’ll all get to plow again some day.
A lot of you may have known about his passing, but I wanted any of you who didn’t to know. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/fort-wayne-in/roger-vancamp-7815016 . Edited by JoeM(GA) - 04 May 2018 at 6:38pm |

Hate to hear this. Roger was one of the kindest and honest men I have ever known. He has been to the shop several times, met him at the interstate at different times and places. He was very knowledgeable about the little AC tractors. He will definitely be missed. I had only met his son Don that passed away. God bless his family! Truly a gentleman I was proud to call a friend! Tracy

I certainly agree with Joe and Tracy; I enjoyed visiting with Roger and doing business with Roger. Bought my first Allis G cultivators from Roger. Herb(GA)

I had to chuckle when Joe mentioned about that gruf ole' exterior that Rog had. When you first met him, he sounded like a man with an attitude! But once you got to know him, and see the knowledge of the Orange he had especially with the B/C crowd, he was a man that was worth listening to. And, quite funny at times to. The last I got to chat for a while with Rog was at the Ohio GOTO quite a few years back. He'll be missed for sure in the Orange community that's fir' sure.

Back when I found out about Rogers yard and first met him he pastured the yard with goats. I was after used pistons and sleeves that were within spec. He opened a gate and pointed to two old truck boxes with shelves loaded with both. I headed out with my mic's and sorted until I had eight good sets. He charged me 75 dollars after telling me he normally got 10 dollars each. I went back many times for conversation and parts. He told me one time when he saw my truck driving in he said to himself here comes another 300 bucks. I didn't have a budget but seemed to buy 300 dollars or slightly more. I bought after many trys his narrow front B that he claimed he knew it came from the dealer new that way. He gave me the phone number of an 80 year old man that could back it up. I called the gent and he could not say for sure it was factory but Allis Chalmers had shipped in stranger things on special order. He remembered the tractor but didn't see it new. I was convinced until I switched torque tubes and could see where the wide front wishbone had wore into the torque tube. He decided he would sell me the tractor after his son let it set out and water got into the cylinders. I gave him 800 for the tractor and after it was loaded he took his Oliver fork truck and loaded at least another 800 dollars worth to help me restore it. My neighbor called him last fall to get a tire and rim. Just yesterday he talked to me about going over to get it. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

I too am sorry to read about Roger. I have fond memories of dealing with him when I was restoring a 1938 B for my youngest son who was about 8 at the time. My son was with me when we went to pick up the parts and it didn't take Roger long to figure out that the wide eyed 8 year old was the ultimate recipient,, and the parts got REAL cheap.
Same story for another "old grump" Norm Steinman, went on out to Norm's place when we left Roger's. We had a pile of needed parts on the table and Norm had a bill about half made out when he looked up and pointed at Allen and asked "these parts for HIS tractor?" Yes, "well why didn't you say so!!?" He tore that bill up and everything got real cheap. Best thing about Allis hobby is people like this, otherwise it's just old iron. |
