Topic: Restoring 1940 Model B (What OG Colors Were Used?)Posted: 11 Mar 2021 at 8:04pm |

Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum.
I recently required a 1940 Model B and would like to restore it. The biggest questions I have at this point are in regards to the 1940 paint schemes. What did they use back then? To my understanding, Persian Orange 1 & blue Long Allis-Chalmers Decals were used, but what about the wheels? Did they make orange rims with silver lining or were they solid orange? Thanks |

the rear rims were galvanized.. Everything else is orange.
there has been some discussion in the past that "some" rims might have come to the ALLIS factory without galvanize... then they would have been painted orange... I dont remember anyone every having proof of that... but not many of us were around then !! ![]() Edited by steve(ill) - 11 Mar 2021 at 9:05pm |

This is a 1940 modified to use as Orchard ( low profile), but the paint and decals are correct.

How about the front rims? Was there a silver lining?
And also the muffler. I really like the looks of this one.

no, the front rims were solid orange..on all B and C tractors.
a lot of the Bs had that tall muffler... I dont really know if there was another option, or changes aftermarket over the years........

the tractor was painted when it was 90% assembled... thats why you will see orange paint on the sides of the black radiator... Tires were added later... mag cap might have been taped off ...... bolts and EVERYTHING were sprayed orange.... no chrome bolts.

Yeah, but chrome or stainless bolts look cool and add detail.
But, to each his own.. |

My 1939 B was supposed to have an under hood muffler, but I opted for the tall muffler to keep the smoke out of my face.

My 47 had a under hood muffler and my grandfather said they didn't last. He put a vertical on it.

I would say it is PO1 , pumpkin color... and just looks a little redish due to camera and time of day / lighting..... my tractor ( orchard) above is PO1........ cant believe this guy went to all that work, correct decals, etc.. and used the wrong paint.

This is a D10 for comparison.. It would be PO2... camera / lighting / time of day all effect the color on computer.

Here is a picture of one in the sunlight. Similar to the first one I posted. Looks like Persian Orange 1, Blue Lettering, and only silver lining on the back rim.
I want to restore my 1940 to look just like it would when it was new, but I really like the added silver lining on the front rims. Hard to decide. |

Cactus, there are a few that are "original" , but most people like to modify a little to suit their needs.. I like alternators and 12 volt systems... i like a push button start ... Decals and Paint look good original, but everyone likes to put THEIR final touches on them.

That is a good point. Thanks for all the tips. I’m planning on using my B to mow my yard this year, then completely restore it this coming winter.
I just think it would be neat to restore it and say, “This is exactly how it looked when it was new 81 years ago!” |

I tend to think the same way! I am a fan of keeping things as close to original as possible, but I don’t get bothered when people add their own modifications. If you’re going to keep it original, the steering wheel and fan belt should be painted orange as well |

Bought this new muffler today at an Allis-Chalmers shop. Planning on installing it tomorrow. The shop told me this would be a period correct muffler and would’ve had the same silver finish. Any advice for the install?

Have an appropriate pipe nipple available in case the manifold pipe is rotted.
Buy a rain cap. Make sure you have the support bracket that ties the exhaust to the manifold. |

Installed the muffler last night. Realized afterwords that my tractor appears to be both Persian Orange colors (1 & 2). Someone must have swiped parts with it at some point. ![]() |
