I am confused on how to remove the pivot pin securing the hydraulic piston for the lift arms on my D17. The manual says to remove the pointed bolt on the bottom of the right brake unit. I did that. The bolt is 1/2 inch that I can tell. Then I'm supposed to thread in a standard 1/2 bolt or shaft 8 inches long to remove the pin. I do that and it just bottoms out in the hole and does nothing. There must be something more to it.

I suppose you have the lift arm housing off? The pin should be threaded but may be full of dirt + brake rod may be in the way. Drive it out from inside out.

Those instructions sure do leave a lot to be desired.
The way I read them, after you remove the "pointed setscrew",
you then insert the 8" rod in through the access hole on the RH
side of the brake housing just above where you removed the setscrew.
I plugged that hole on my tractor to keep out the critters who like to
live there.
The pivot pin for the ram is much larger than 1/2" but is
tapped with 1/2" threads into which you screw the 8" bolt
which enables you to then pull that large pin and release the ram.
Then.......you will be able to remove the lift arm housing.
Now.......I haven't done this yet so I am not speaking from experience  
but I am going to have to at some point as either the hose or ram is 
leaking some on my D-17 Series II.
I hope my interpretation is correct.......I have, on occasion, posted
stuff on here that was not totally correct.  LOL

You need to remove lift arm housing first. The piston will pull out of barrel with lift arm housing.       MACK

Interesting idea......not what the book says but it certainly looks like it will work.
Maybe an A-C tech's shortcut?
Probably need about 3 hands to put it back together that way.

Except.......probably the reason you're going through  all of this work is that you are going to repair the cylinder or replace the hose! Then, you might want to remove the pin.
Granted, you probably wouldn't bother to use that 8" 1/2" bolt since you are now right in there where the pin is.
