    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 at 3:36pm
I took the oldest front tire of my mowing tractor to get some new rubber, and ground the rust out of the inside of the rim that I was surprised to see, and primed and painted it.

Figured this was my one chance to take care of the inside of the rim before I put a new tire on it. Going to get some new rubber on it this month to match my other front tire.

Anyone have any interest in this old rim I replaced? It has a small hole by the bead seat, but the core would probably be good if someone wanted to weld it on another wheel, or wanted to weld up the rust spot in the bead area.

Also, anyone have any interest in this single rib tire? Very tall, deep rib. Assume it is a 5.50x16 tire or something similar. It's got some sidewall cracking from where it sat flat for a couple years.

Here it was mounted to my WD (the side that doesn't have a block of wood under it)... It was working fine, I just don't like mowing with the mismatch of tires as it likes to guide weird since that one rib is super deep:

I can't bring myself to recycle/throw away the rim or the tire if anyone could actually use them.

GG,
Good idea to see if someone wants these items! The cleaned and painted rim looks real good too! New rubber! Nice!

Thanks Chris! Took the rim in to the local farm service yesterday and they are getting me a Carlisle to put on it. My other newer front tire is a Harvest King, so I hope it's a close match. Excited to have new rubber.

I think next year the other tractor will get two new front tires as well as some rim painting, given what I found on the inside of these rims.

I think the rusty rim may have found a new home!

I may be wrong? Maybe Bill Long can comment? I have heard that some of the WD's were delivered with calcium in the front tires? That could have been a contributor too?

You know Chris, I remember grandpa telling me something about that back in the day and that they quit because they kept ruining front rims. Wasn't sure if that was on his old WCs or WDs or other WDs he had before it was pared down to the last one.

Alrighty, new tire has been acquired and mounted!! Looks pretty good, and really glad I got the rust removed from the core and it primed and painted first.

Got her put on this morning. Harvest King on the left, Carlisle on the right. 5.50-16. They're both pretty close. Am excited to have a matched set!

I just found this post that asked a question.  Were WD's shipped with Calcium in the front tires?  Yes they were.  In fact just about every tractor shipped that I sold or worked on in that era had calcium in the front tires.  Helped with weight and in my time did not cause a problem.  However, when we replaced the front tires we did not replace the calcium
I cannot tell you the exact dates when calcium was shipped on new tractors but only that it was and was on all models except the G's - that frankly could have used the additional weight.
Good Luck!
