I have had just the opposite experience I several bargain tractors I use daily during hay  season that I bought what I consider cheap did a few repairs on some but nothing major
examples
1)Oliver 1550 Diesel I bale with drug it out the woods down NC with a loader paid
$1500 spent $100 changing fluids,battery $100,New Starter $120,injector $100 so for less then $2000 I have a great running really good tractor.
2)D15 with power steering $1800 in it after trading put gas in it and have been running the 62-T square baler I paid $200 for it with twin in it ready to bale.
3)David Brown 990 paid $550 bought a $30 lift pump and changed oil good running old tractor.
4 David Brown 780 with a tree across the hood $1000 beat the hood out put on a Yanmar plastic fuel tank and been raking hay with it for 10 years did buy a $30 lift pump for that one too.
5) Have 5 New Holland round balers paid $500 each for 3 of them,$300 for one and one was given to me.$1800 total have 3 working balers and two parts machines.
6) Long 460 paid $1100 about 10 years ago almost trouble free have put about 400 hrs on it.
