Will high octane fuel ruin the coating inside the fuel tank? I noticed on the can it warns to drain carburator, and tank. I used RedCoat.

Ok, I guess there was lack of knowledge about this. If threre is anyone wondering I now can comment with experence.

I put come VP C16 in the tank to crank the new engine in the pull tractor. We fired it up ran it for a few minutes, shut it down. I drained the carb, a per directions, also drained the tank, also per directions. Well, there was a couple of pockets of fuel left in there. I sent a e mail to the RedKoat company asking about the fuel with their product, the answer was "NO". Monday morning I went to refire the tractor to pull it out of the shop, opened the tank and it looked like chewing gum.

To make a long story short, the fuel ruined the tank sealer, seems any fuel with lead will do it. I had to mount a fuel cell and pump to get it going till I can get the sealer out of the tank. Thought this might save someone a bunch of trouble and $$$$$. I copied the e mails from the company and pasted them here.

    First e mail,

I coated the tank on our pulling tractor some time ago. The product has worked great, after an engine failure the engine was rebuilt to a very high compression, requiring a very high octane fuel. The only fuel available to me here is VP C16. I only need a octane rating of 108 to satisify the engine, so I will mix 5 gallons of VP C 116 with 5 gallons of aviation gas of 100 octane. What will this do to the tank sealer?

Jason,

The VP C16 is not compatible with Red-Kote it is a good solvent with lead in it. This mixture will break down the Red-Kote. Avgas is something that we usually don’t deal much with because people generally don’t use this. I have not tested this type of fuel, but know that it contains lead as well. We usually say no to leaded fuels if it can be done.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Jason,

Thanks Ms. Jones,

In the time I sent the E mail and when I received your reply the fuel was added to the tank. It was only in there for a short time, then drained. How would I know if the coating has been damaged?

After receiving your E Mail I purchased a fuel cell for the fuel to be used in. I have several tractors with the same tank, and may want to use this sealed tank on one of those if it's not damaged, though it would be an emergency because of mismatched paint, and this one has dents in it. They are actually farm tractors and run on unleaded pump gas. The tank still has a small spot of fuel in it where it wasn't quite level when drained.

Another question.....   The fuel cell may cause the tractor not to be able to participate because use of "non stock'' components, Can the coating be removed? If so, how?

Jason Birdsong

Look into the tank and see if you can see if the coating has been pulled away or has bubbled. You may not have had it in long enough to cause damage.

Also, you can take the Red-Kote out with acetone or MEK. Fill the tank up and let it sit for a few days and it will reliquify.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you!
