Hi All,

I have a 1973 170 G226 with a 500 loader.  I have owned it for two years and it ran great when I first got it.  I messed with the carb because it seemed to start running too rich and it has just gotten progressively worse...to the point of black smoke at baseline settings.  i have the main jet at 4 and a half turns out and the idle screw where it should be (forget the # of turns off the top of my head).  It is falling on its face and unusable like this. The engine is in great shape and has excellent compression so I am anxious to get it running like a champ again. What typically goes wrong with these carbs that make them rich?

I was going to buy a carb rebuild kit but don't have much experience with carbs.  I do all my own work on my tractor but this is an area I don't have experience with.  how straightforward is it?  Is it simple or should I have a pro rebuild it?  Any recommendations?

Thanks Phil for the mention. I offer Carb, Mag, Distributor, Starter, Generator, and Alternator rebuilding services if interested. Do a lot of 12V conversions on the Starters and Gennies also just so ya know. Carry a full line of Carb kits in stock along with parts. Sounds like you need a set of floats for starters. Probably taking on fuel and sinking over fueling the engine. Hence the black smoke......

Let me preface this by saying that I am far from an expert at rebuilding a carb. I have done a few Marvel Schebler's but haven't done a Zenith yet.

Here are a few tips that I have learned (mostly the hard way!):

Make sure you have a screwdriver that fits anything you are taking out. If you batter the slot, they are much harder to get out!

Mark the venturi with a permanent marker. It's possible to put them in upside down.

Likewise, mark the throttle plate. I always put a mark on the outside, so I know it's right going back together.

When you spray carb cleaner in a hole, make sure you know where it's going to come out. You certainly don't want to get it in your eyes and it's better not to get it anywhere on you.

I use my cell phone camera and take a lot of pictures as I am taking it apart, so I have something to refer to when I am putting it back together. A magnifying glass helps, too!

Clean, clean and clean some more! If everything is not clean, you are wasting your time! Work on it in a clean surface! Use paper or something to cover your workbench. I have a scrap of vinyl flooring I use. It wipes up like new when I get done.

As I said, I am far from an expert! I hope this helps you. Good luck!!!

I just reread your original post. Have you checked the screen in the sediment bowl? Have you checked to make sure you are getting good fuel flow through the line at the carb?

If everything is clean, try some Seafoam. I am not much for these additives, but Seafoam never ceases to amaze me. My neighbor was having problems with his snowblower after our recent major snowstorm. I took him out some Seafoam, poured it in the gas tank and in about 10 minutes it was running much better. It's a cheap easy fix, if it works.

If you have Champion spark plugs in it, the problem may not be the carb. It seems that Allis Chalmers tractors don't run very well on Champion plugs.

I just rebuilt my Zenith on my WD. If you decide to do it yourself buy the complete kit. The above mentioned video is pretty good. As said before cleaning very well is key. Also, make sure the deck of each carb halve is smooth. I used 320 grit sand paper on a flat block to make sure I stayed flat. A few swipes cleaned the surfaces right up. My WD runs very well since I rebuilt the carb. Takes some patience but not a hard job. And if you dont want to tackle it, send it to Steve, I’m sure he will do a great job on it.
