    Posted: 18 Jun 2012 at 8:07am

Finding an original RC/styled WC steering wheel is very hard and pricey. I found a wheel for a model Massey Harris 20 that looks similar with the same shaft size but uses a 'groove pin'. What is a groove pin and might this wheel work.

Thanks, Joe

Although very good quality replacement steering wheels for Styled WC/WD/WD45 are readily available and they work on a RC. They are not an accurate replacement for the RC. WC wheels are about 18" diameter and RC wheels are only about 15.5" diameter. I just measured several over the weekend including a NOS never installed RC factory replacement wheel. This NOS part is just like the styled WC wheels but smaller diameter. It is correct for a very late RC and since the chance of finding a usable early covered spoke RC wheel is virtually nil, this one is going on the '39 RC that we're currently restoring. What is the diameter of the Massey-Harris wheel that you have? Kip

Hi Kip, The MH wheel is 17 1/2" Dia. with 7/8" shaft size. Here is what it looks like. So this may work for the WC? I saw an original Styled WC that looked similar to the MH 20 and thought it would work on the RC but I forgot about the diameter.

Do you you have a pic of the RC wheel ? Thanks, Joe

I don't have a picture of the RC steering wheel, but it looks exactly like a styled WC/WD steering wheel with the exposed metal spokes, but is just the smaller diameter. This replacement steering wheel was purchased from an A-C dealer in the late forties by the owner of the RC that we're restoring. For some reason he never got around to installing it. When we bought the tractor from his son a couple of years ago, the steering wheel was still hanging from a nail in an old grainery where it had been for over 60 years. It is painted Persian Orange 1 rim and all, and even had the original A-C inventory hang tag still attached. Unfortunately the tag totally discintegrated when Dad touched it. Although this is not the correct style for our '39 RC, it is a proper dealer replacement part and will be a unique feature of our restored tractor. This steering wheel would be correct for a very late '40 or '41 RC.

The manufacture of our replacement wheel which Kip referanced is SHELLER. It is a very well built wheel.
