We have a new to us 98 r62. I need to remove a set of knives what's the best way to go about it? Through the very small hole while sitting inside the engine compartment?

If you lower the side shield above the unloading auger, there is another door the same size on the outside that can aid in the removal and assembly of the chopper knives. It's a pain no matter what but at least there is only 12 knives to do!

Sooo.... I tore into the chopper today, after getting in there I realized the bottom or floor was broken apart and missing several inches of the perforated grate. Letting lots of chaff into accelerator rolls. So took out both halves which made it "easier" to remove hammers. How the hell does one work on chopper hammers with just the "10 x "8 hole and the tiny "2 x "3 holes to remove bolts on left and right. One of the concave knives were bent over at a a 90 degree above the "bottom". That took and hour to beat straight enough to remove through the bottom. The "hammers" (knives) were in bad shape. Looks like 2 sets were worn on both sides, 1 set was bent, one set was chipped. I may be able to keep 1 set for emergency. Several bolts were wore 1/3 through because bushing was moving inside bracket. $800 later, for bottom,($291), 6 hammer sets $85 each and concave knives,it should be good to go.
I'm glad I tore into it. It would have given me trouble. But I have to say the L3 chopper is a lot more user friendly. Thanks for the input and looking forward to putting her into some corn soon. I may have some more questions on this ol gal as I get into harvest. Leon B MO

I sorta knew it going in but the winter purchased R62 I have is quite pricey for repair parts compared to the old F2. However,I think once it's gone through it will out last me with few repairs so in the end it's a win.
