 Topic: R62 bad day..dropped #3 exhaust valve

8.3 Cummins. Curtis, my son, was running in beans, he called and said "Dude, I think I just blew a head gasket." He said lost power instantly and saw white smoke out the exhaust. Shut her down. I will say he is very good at diagnosis for his age. After removal of the valve cover we knew it was bad, #3 exhaust valve was broke. Remove head, piston beat to death with top of valve broke off also.. Disappointing We have about 70 ac of beans and 90 ac of corn left, neighbor said he would help us finish up, that's a plus. Machine is in a bad spot 5 miles from base. Figured to take tractor down to hook into head lift hose with adapters just to get head on cart and throat in locked up position then try to find someone to get machine back to shop. We plan to rebuild the 8.3 this winter.
I told Curtis, man this happened at a bag time, he said "There is no good time for a combine engine to let go". He is right.
Dad has been into and out of hospital over the past 3 weeks with afib and covid by-products. He could use a prayer.
My day was going real good until 10:30, as they say "day aint over yet". We'll try again tommorow. Leon B Mo

Yep things happen...mainshaft brg died on my 62 w 15A corn left.Thats why I kept the F2. Glad it was near the end not the beginning. Told wife we live to fight another day.

Thanks everyone, Dad is supposed to get a pacemaker on Tuesday. Hopefully that does the trick. I'll try to post pics but don't know what size they may be from my phone to email to here. It is ugly. Viewer discretion is advised... Curtis has been looking and seems to think we can do a complete rebuild with new head for about 4k, with a little help from our local Ace mechanic. We did finish the beans last night about an hour before the rain moved in. Big frickin deere with 35' draper running 5mph. Again Thanks. Leon B MO

You can't beat having good neighbors when equipment goes haywire or health issues sneak up on you. Two days ago a bearing went out when I was baling cornstalks. I noticed a wisp of smoke where the baler pivots as I discharged a bale. As soon as the bale rolled away, the rubber coated roller that drives the belts started on fire and I couldn't get it out by splashing it with water. I got back in the tractor and pulled the baler out of the field and unhooked it. The belts were burning by that time, fully engulfed when the fire dept got there and hosed it down. Neighbor happened to be going by to bring his tractor and baler home from a custom baling job and asked if we wanted him to finish baling. I told him "you must have a police scanner in your tractor to get here this fast". I hope your dad has a speedy recovery, that's the important thing.

Same thing happened to my neighbor's R65 a couple years ago. He pulled motor and tore down. New head and piston got it going.

I wonder what would cause that? Had valve set been adjusted recently? Sometimes that helps. Or maybe just fatigue on old parts.

All valves are two piece, fuse welded in the stem.

We did get the grainhead up and off and home with the hydraulics of our 8050 and some fittings. Removed drive line couplers and pulled 1/2 mile to a road that we can access with a de-tatch trailer to haul her home. I will say, earlier in the season the serpentine belt tensioner bearing gave up. As Curtis was dumping the grain he said, " My hyd oil temp light is on and volt meter is down. I got in the cab and the temp gauge was in the red. Shut it down and replaced tensioner. It started and ran fine. I honestly don't know if that was the cause of failure.
Our neighbor said he saw Curtis pull into the field and saw white smoke out the exhaust but couldn't get to him in time to let him know. So the engine was pushing water through the exhaust for at least 10 minutes prior to failure, so my question is, what happened first? No way a valve can rattle around for 10 minutes, head gasket failure? Injector? Or damage from the overheating problem 100 hours ago.? Curtis did say it was running fine and then in 2 second's lost power and he said he couldn't shut it down fast enough. Thanks for the input Leon B Mo

May never know the answer to that. Could head gasket fail and let water in cylinder and exiting through hot exhaust valve cause valve to pop off?

White smoke doesn't mean water. Without smelling the smoke it could have just been unburnt fuel. Bent valve would cause no compression and white smoke. Hard to say at this point.
