I've been kicking around the idea of possibly converting the pin bucket on my 500 loader to a quick attach type system. I don't see any reason why the under-frame pistons should be any different than the more modern over-frame design, but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or experience on problems it might cause? I wonder why Allis put the bucket pistons under the loader frame anyway, as it seems they are more vulnerable there.
Also, I would really like to be able to remove the loader arms and bucket easily for mowing and such. I lust after a Westendorf detachable or something once I win the lottery, but would like to fabricate a bracket of some sort so I could at least take the arms off and leave the sub-frame without a lot of work. Anyone with any experience on how hard or easy it is to routinely remove the loader with some kind of support bracket? |

All you need is something to connect a come-along to from overhead and grab each boom arm close to their pivot pins. Remove boom cylinder pins and boom pins and back the tractor away (after disconnecting bucket hoses). The boom cylinders can be lifted up to the towers and wires in place. This can be done in a shed or make a frame to sit outdoors and leave the loader boom/bucket there.

Have a 500 loader on a 185 we made quick attach with help from local blacksmith. Copied the pins off a 460 loader and support stands. Put a coupler on the 2 lift hoses and the lift cylinders stay with the tractor when loader is not on

Steve Fischer sells a quick tach setup for skid steer buckets on the 500 series loaders. He is on this site.

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking originally of removing the lift cylinder pins from the bottom of the base frame to remove the loader, but leaving them on and removing their top pins from the boom makes more sense. I found a manual for the 500 loader, and it shows a curved support stand supporting the loader when removed from the tractor. If I don't want to take up room in the shed using an overhead come-along, I might try to fabricate a stand. Either way it is going to be more than a 5 min job to remove/replace the loader, but it is a pain when mowing. Of course, as soon as it is off, I will need it for something and have to put it right back on. Chad, thanks for the heads up on the quick attach adapter. That actually might be the best alternative to removing the loader arms all the time. Without a large front bucket, the arms themselves aren't too intrusive, and I can change the front attachments quickly. Not that I'm the first to say it, but the D17 IV is just as capable a tractor as any of the $40K+ foreign stuff currently available. With live hydraulics and pto, factory 3ph and loader, it is quite the tractor. I took time to add a 2nd remote, and keep the position and draft control lubricated and adjusted, so the hydraulics all work like new. I really wouldn't trade it for a new machine even if it was free. One day I'll get around to a good paint job, and then it will look as good as it runs.
