Whats a good way to replace the mesh in the air cleaner. Or is there a way to clean it out. It is to the point something needs to be done. With the air cleaner hose hooked up engine is choking itself. With it unhooked runs like a top.

Have you pulled the cup at the bottom and made sure it's clean?

Yep i think have it narrowed down to the mesh being dirty. And as far as i can remember. It hasn't been clean in my lifetime.

I have set one in the parts washer. Put the hose in the top and just let it run thru. Then I took the cap back off proved it upside down and let it run the other direction. Hot wash it when your done. Mine turned out clean in just a few hours. To take the mesh out you'll have to break the welds. And weld it back together when your done. The old packing is much heavier than what I could find for replacement when we took dads apart. If I were to do another I'd just hot wash with simple green. The full streangth simple green we used for cleaning military equipment is stronger than Walmart gets used with a hot wash it eats the grease right out. It won't hurt the stainless mesh inside.

They usually are a real female dog at that point.  When I had one that bad, I used a drill and drilled through the weld spots and took it apart.  I bought new stuff from one of the vendors on here.  THE ONLY WAY to do it....

Wait a minute.....to take the mesh out to do routine maintenance you have to break welds?!?!

Looks like Henry Ford's "wanna-be tractors" had another advantage....just use a pointed object to snap off the bottom retainer on the cleaner, and the mesh pulls right out for easy cleaning/replacement.

Hm.

Had the proper routine mantainence (change the oil in the cup daily, more frequently in dusty conditions) the mesh would never have gotten dirty enough to be a problem.

Now that you have one that’s choked up, the parts washer method works well. Also a good soak in a 5 gallon bucket of kerosene will do the job, just keep plunging it like a stopped up drain.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Put mine in the parts washer for a few days with fluid running through it.  Worked for me.

would a result of a clogged/dirty air cleaner be the engine "pulsing" when running? The linkage rod from the governor on my CA goes back and forth and makes a pulsing sound. I confirmed it has good gas flow.

My G used to do that, and my B currently does, due to a broken anti-surge spring. You might check out. Fixed it on the G by adding a stiffer spring.

Here's a link to what I mean.

Not saying it couldn't be the air cleaner, but this is something to check as well.

thank you, Creston. It probably needs to be cleaned anyway, but I know it doesnt have the spring there, so I will get that taken care of too!

There is a fill line on the fill cup. For oil, not a thick or viscous oil but a thinner oil. I use plain old synthetic 10w30.

I replaced mine with new mesh from Steiner. I installed it by sticking it up into the air cleaner, rolling it. It was a pain in the but to do that but I won't ever half to do it again and it was easier than breaking welds and rewelding!
