A couple years ago I had a F2 and in the book it had a setting for grinding cob corn and in the special chaffers it had a picture of it looked like a punched hole sheet for the chaffer and it said install it and pull the sieve out. Does anyone know what size those holes are, I’ve been trying to make it with my R50 but up till now I’ve been opening both up all the way but I’m about to start doing more and was planning on having one made so I can catch more cob and not have to worry about plugging the top chaffer. Thanks for any help

No idea....thinking out loud....tighten concave and cut air? Keep shoe opened up? Every one with a rotor is trying to help from grinding cobs.

Years ago I made corn cob mix with my Deere 95. I removed both top and bottom screens. My mistake was I did not put any kind of frame back in and I broke my cleaning shoe frame. About that time we went to a corn head on the forage harvester for snaplage. I had a friend with a 6620 and they removed the bottom fingers and then made a metal frame with a few bars across for a top chaffer. Are you grinding it after harvest or trying to grind it with the combine? I ran mine through a grinder mixer then put it in a silage bag. Tom

A "corn cob mix" on a Gleaner involves removing the lower sieve, turning the air wide open, and use the 1 5/8" round-end long tooth chaffer. Open the chaffer pretty wide to get the sample you want. Run the rotor at 300 to 350 RPM and set the concave clearance down to where you get the results you want, but I would say less than 1/2" probably 3/8". You will have to drive VERY SLOW to handle all this material that is going up the elevator !!!

I actually left combine set from running beans making it this year and even tightened concave up to just clearing and run rotor 450-500 because it was working better but I still same as plug the top chaffer. The combine does have trimpe rotor bars if that makes a difference I don’t know but the F2 had them so I know I always had to run things tighter and faster than normal

Faster is fine, but may cause more rotor loss. You can't open the chaffer straight up. It still has to have some angle to the teeth to prevent plugging. Try a clean chaffer and start at 3/4" opening.

Thanks for all the help I was just looking in my corn head book and it shows the long and short chaffer but it says corn cob mix chaffer not shown so I’m still on the lookout seeing if there was a special one for the mix but this is still better than when I shoveled ear corn

For now been using square rooms in our bank barn that unload from underneath the floor and couple wagons but working on setting up some small bins with drying floors. I screw a grain aerator in the corn in the rooms and wagons for a bit and so far so good but I’m not running it till it’s dry in field then run it though my grinder mixer

Sounds like you should be good. We tried corn that way some years ago and had trouble because the cobs were holding more moisture than the grain. My father played with a few different varieties but in the end, had no good way to dry in a bin. Also seemed that most of the local elevators didn’t want to mess with it any longer, so we had no storage. Very nice if you can just grind from a dump or auger. Anything to minimize all that shoveling is a plus.

Set the concave tight so as to break up the cobs and maybe crack some of the kernels and put it all in the tank instead of picking ear corn and grinding the whole ear later the combine is doing half the work and making it “fluid “ so I can move and store easier. Couple years ago I retrofitted our old Clayton lambert bin to hold ear corn so I could get a corn drag underneath the floor but there’s still a lot of shoveling to do with ear corn and I was tired of loosing so much corn from the n/i picker I had plus more the extra equipment to make and move it

We handled more of a 1/4 cob, sounds like you are really busting it up with the combine.
