I'm in the middle of harvesting/picking, shelling, washing and packaging in 1 1/4 # quart and 5# gallon ziplocks. I sell Purplehull peas fresh and frozen.
Peas will keep my bride and myself busy till frost. I plant manageable new patches about every 15 days. Drip Irrigation gets them up if it don't rain. Anyone else growing Southern Cow Peas like Creams and Crowders and Purplehulls? Market is hot here.

Good to hear from you Ken, glad you are staying busy. Didn't know there were so many varieties of peas. Don't mean to get off subject but my grandmother made the best cream peas ever. God I miss her. Got a good market for all them peas, raise your prices. Again good to hear from you Ken.

I have two Taylor Mfg LITTLE SHELLERS.
We pick in recycled Yellow Purina Kitty Litter plastic buckets. Paying attention how you lay peas in the rectangular bucket is important. M0st pods fit nice across the short distance in the bucket. I always lay them side by side with the pointed bloom end all in the same direction. When you go to the sheller with a handful the rollers grab the pointed ends first the best. These cat litter buckets when carefully packed will shell out a little over a gallon or 5 + pounds of peas. Close to a 1/2 bushel when shook down level with the top. I retail the Quarts fresh on ice for $6. I weigh a Quart at 20 ounces. I sell 5 pound gallon bags fresh or frozen to restaurants. for $17. My best pea customer buys 150 gallons a year. I plan on delivering them no less than 20 by the 4th of July. Pea season is just getting started Edited by Ken in Texas - 29 Jun 2018 at 6:05am |

It aint easy getting folks out to U-PIK Peas. I make this offer to everyone. You pick 2 bushel. One for you one for me. No money changes hands. Even offer the picker free use of my pea sheller. Most will rather pay $6 a quart and let us do all the stoop labor sweaty work
These 98 degree afternoons keeps me out of the pea patch past 11am. I have my sheller set up in the AC. Eat a early breakfast and hit the patch at 6 . Plenty light enough this morning with a full moon. Big second pick tomorrow, Saturday. Come on down! Lab and a KEYTRUDA Cancer treatment at 7:30 am Today in Longview TX

Ken, I put the peas/beans on a cookie sheet and set it in the freezer. Then the next day I put those frozen ones into my vacuum packer and suck out the air. They'll keep for a few years (if the kids don't raid the freezer) and are always just like fresh. Best money I've ever spent!!
