I have a 1949 "C" Model and when I engage the PTO (lever forward and horizontal to ground) the tractor will not move forward and engine bogs down almost dieing, then engaging the foot clutch and disengaging engine from trans it comes back. This tractor was not running for over 40 years and I brought it back to life so I am working out the bugs in stages this is the next one. During the resurrection I did pull the PTO housing of to look at the gears in back end to be sure not rusted. I don't know if I missed something when reinstalling it or not. It is my first one I have ever worked on so very new and leaning about them. I know it is not a live PTO and that it turn when trans is turning but not sure what to start looking at first. I do have service manual but it is somewhat confusing. Have been searching form but after 250 pages have not found an explanation so figured i would tap all the knowledge with new post. Thank you to every one who post their knowledge here as I have read a great deal and learned a lot, it helped me bring this tractor back life. Will try and post a before and after pic soon. This is not a show tractor by any means I will use it for brush hogging and just fun riding it.

Yes tractor will move when PTO is not engaged. Yes the PTO will turn by hand when disengaged. that is what has me puzzled.

When you engage the PTO you also engage the belt pulley. I would guess you have a seized bearing or bearings. Try turning the belt pulley when it is not engaged. If it does not turn you might be able to free it up by trying to turn back and fourth.
If the belt pulley will turn when not engaged the only other think I can think of is when you put it back on the slide gear did not get lined up with the lever deal and binds. The hydraulic pump pistons could also be seized when could be checked easy by removing the pump housing. As long as the tractor moves properly when the PTO is not engaged there is nothing else in the assembly. ![]() Edited by Dick L - 12 Oct 2017 at 11:35am |

If the PTO turns free, then the belt pulley has to be turning as well. They are on the same drive.
