If you work dilligently to add updates where needed, and the engine is o.k., and you get it dialed in nice, they are still a beast in small grains, wheat. I dont know about corn harvesting with them, never done it. There are people on this site that can advise the best bang for your buck changes to make (feeder house, rotor mods, exit mods, cascade pan, after market rotors etc.)

An 85 model is by far better than a 1980 model.

I will give a little information based on what I know. We have an N7 and a M. My brother/partner uses the N7 and I use the M when I am not running the Freightliner and trailers.
In its day it was the largest combine made in North America. So the ads went. The engine is powerful enough. It lives longer than the smaller cube engines that were close to maxed out on the N6. As far as we know, our 1983 model has not been overhauled. It uses a little oil and we will overhaul it when we get a chance. There were substantial improvements done around 1983. We were told 104 different things. Your proposed combine should have them. Ours was from wheat country and it did a great job. Soybeans were disappointing. I discovered the “hyper” harvest guys on the internet. My brother was very skeptical. We tried the mods and it was tremendous. It handled green stem soybeans night and day different. Just do the mods if you get the combine. There are guys who know a lot more about them than I. I just know they work, and they are not very expensive either. The bin is about the largest, if not the largest of its time. The auger works for us going into a graincart. Some people put an extension on. Opinions will differ as to the necessity. We run standard. I have heard of rear axle spindles breaking, but not to us. We got a rear wheel assist axle and installed it. I have read that newer Gleaners have fewer belts and drives. I do not know, never ran a newer one. I think they are a good value if they have been maintained. It is a 30 year old machine. There will be things that wear out. They are simple to work on, if needed. If you do the hyper mods, you will be happy with its performance. Hope this helps some. |
