I bought a 7040 last month, and it was leaking just a bit of coolant from the gasket at the elbow behind the oil cooler. The water pump had a bearing go out shortly thereafter.
Anyhow, while I have the coolant drained, what is the recommended coolant type for these engines? After buying a 7020 the year before that turned out to have major cavitation of the cylinder liners, I'd prefer to avoid that going forward. |

Good to know, but...
I've read recommendations to use extended life coolant that meets the CAT EC-1 spec. However the coolant filter comes charged with BTE, which I read is not compatible with NOAT coolants. So, it's all very confusing for a recovering cooling system neglector. Until I bought my 7020, I lived by "as long as it doesn't freeze, leave it alone" and change coolant if draining to perform other repairs and it looks really gross. Apparently that works for old gas motors and dry sleeve engines. |

The universal "green" coolant is good and its compatible with the pre-charged filter.
Remember, its a 40 year old tractor...what did they have back then? |

43 years ago, I was using an antifreeze additive called Nalcool 2000. It turned green antifreeze pink in color. It did the same thing as a water filter and you'd never have cavitation erosion of the sleeves or sleeve Orings fail if you used it. Todays modern Caterpillar type coolant is the same thing. Shut off your water filter or remove it when using this newer generation coolant.

Little confused? Would regular old green antifreeze be fine if changed annually ?

You can use green as long as you add the supplemental coolant additive to it and check it with test strips to make sure you have the right amount added to it

Can I get the supplement and test strips somewhere besides the dealer?

I get the additive at Advance auto or NAPA and the test strips from NAPA or heavy truck dealer

You can still use a filter with the EC-1 type coolant (red diesel coolant), just get the one without the precharge. Wix offers one I know for sure bc I have a Napa filter on my 7000 that is just a straight filter with no additives.
