Look at the engine number and cross reference to Bryan Smiths chart. The other possibility is on the top flange of the hydraulic pump. I have several with serial numbers there, but they don't always match the tractor number.

It's NOT ON TOP of the left brake housing. If you stand behind the tractor, it will be facing you. (I have a feeling you knew this). Scraping the paint should have revealed it. Had to do this to mine. Look some more I guess.

That number in front of the shifter is cast into the housing. Sorry I never looked into what it's for,but the serial number will be stamped.

Early WD's were stamped on TOP to the right side of the left brake cover. All 45's should have a stamp on the back of the differential housing unless it has been replaced.

If it is a curved shifter and there is no stamp were indicated, take a look at the hydraulic pump housing and compare engine numbers here: http://people.clemson.edu/%7Ewsmth/SNFind/esn_tsn6.htm" rel="nofollow - http://people.clemson.edu/~wsmth/SNFind/esn_tsn6.htm

Some wimp on the hammer stamped mine. It's very hard to see with my old wimpey eyes. Ya gotta look close. It's real fact.
