The Ross Steering Box should I use gear oil or axle grease in it?

An interesting observation, I had the two steering boxes apart, one off my 52 B and the other one somewhere in the 40's , the seal in the 52 is a neoprene material and the one in the 40's was cork.  Other than that no difference.  The pin on the sector gear on both of them were worn.  However, one of them had been repaired by someone who mearly welded the metal that was worn off but it had worn again.  So I decided to try it myself, I had nothing to loose and everything to gain.  I  welded and filed it until I got it as good as new, well almost new.  I'm sure it cannot last as long as a new sector but for the use that it's going to get by us it will last a long time.  Besides I have the option of making use of my welder again.

I use gun grease rather that wheel bearing grease. My thought it would tend to seep into the groove better as it softer and when it gets warmer it will kinda run.

I've rebuilt a couple that had been filled with grease, the shaft's were badly damaged from lack of lube to the bushings. I use the thickest gear oil that I can find. If you use grease, cornhead grease would be your best bet.

I drill & tap the cross shaft housing between the bushings and put grease fitting in  when you grease the front end put a shot or too in cross shaft fitting

The gearbox lube should be 80 or 145 wt as it also lubricates the upper and lower bearings in the box. I have had to rebuild the bearings  on a few of these boxes where someone decided to lube them with grease instead of oil. The top (and sometimes the bottom) bearings get all pitted up and fall out due to lack of lube and/or water. Found that the balls from a #6205 sealed bearing are the right size; have not found a source for the races and have reused them by putting the best race on top and the worst one one the bottom. The steering shaft side seal is still available from AGCO; however have made my own gaskets for the side plate.

I know this thread is older, but does anyone know if Tracy Martin still makes the pegs for the steering rod for an allis CA? I am in need of a set. Thanks!!

Welcome to forum. Tracy is on forum. You should start a new topic in farm equipment section asking same questions. He should see it and respond. Goodluck

We rebuilt  the steering box on a B and had success at Sandy Lake getting new bearings and I think races too. Awesome people to deal with.
