These things are very cheaply made, broke after one week of use. Is there a kit to rebuild the original?

Get a Cole Hersee switch whenever you can.

A lot of general purpose-universal switches are only rated for 5 amps! Read the specs on the switches if you are re-wiring your way and consider the loads. Did I see a suggestion not too long ago to route the output of an alternator through the ignition switch? Ain't going to work, for long.
If it is a purpose built replacement part that is failing, then it might be a cheap-o.

Yes the mechanical switches that attach to the starter and is rod operated are junk. I don't know of anything currently available new that is not made in China for this application.
------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

I took mine apart and filed the contacts until they were smooth and fully, well, contacted each other. If there's enough left of the switch, that's an option.

I had a similar problem. Removed the old switch, cleaned all the contact points, and put it back on. Has been working fine for several years now.

The Cole Hersee looks identical to the one I have minus the side terminal. Is that a positive or negative terminal? I could try to clean up my old one, but one problem is the spring and push button is wore out, and binding.

Most likely positive, but you can check it with a VOM, and if it's activated only when the switch is depressed, for voltage to something else when starting.

I can see if you're 'whimpy' about pushing on the rod, you'd get a LOT of burning and pitting of the contacts which of course makes it worse the next time you use it. Push hard and hold.... would be my advice.
It's also important that both pieces mate very well ! ANY rough spots and arcing will occour, again , pitting the pieces.
I've always wondered about 'figuring the math' to choose a capacitor to cross the switch to quench some of the arc ( same as points) then something else comes up, someone wants something, sigh...too many projects too little time....

Steve is right. We still have a pile of USA made switches yet from 25 years ago when I bought out an old Automotive Electrical business. The real way to go is change the Starter motor over to a stud design, and incorporate a starter relay to it like the "D" series Tractors have. No voltage drop, full power to the Starter. Use a good quality starter solenoid like a C/H or SMP version for forklifts and a high amp key crank Ignition switch. I keep all of that in stock... Steve@B&B

I have an Allis C and have had problems with the factory original starter switch. I was able to clean it up by sand blasting it. You must remove it completely to get it into the sand blaster.
