I like using synthetic 10W 30 engine oil in my D14 power steering, much because of our cold winters. My power steering has improved immensely from a leak by using Lucas power steering stop leak additive.
Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. Previously- I 600,TL745,200,FL9,FR12,H3,816 LBH. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal!

you can use Power Steering fluid from the Auto Store... Or older versions of Automatic Trans Fluid Type A, F, Dextron 1-2-3 ..( I would not use the new MERCON LV or other synthetic with too many addatives- might effect old seals)..... or you can use Universal tractor Fluid ( UTF)..
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I put 10W-30 in my series 1 D17. Have also drained and used Universal hydraulic fluid to see which worked best. Both work fine. Series II went to transmission fluid as Steve stated.

ATF or hydraulic fluid.  ATF is better in cold weather, but will leak if your seals are weak because the oil is thinner.
I run ATF in all of mine.  No problems - all my seals are good.
