If the tractor was positive ground, then connect the positive to the ground. If the tractor was negative ground, then connect negative to the ground.
If the tractor has been originally a positive ground and had an alternator put on, then it is most likely a negative ground system.
Never reverse charge a battery.
On new to you tractors always verify what polarity the electrical system is. Check to see if alternator, then most likely it is 12 volt negative... (unless alternator is stamped positive ground). If tractor has been changed from 6-12 volt positive ground to alternator and the amp gauge show discharge after it starts and returns to 0 after a few moments, then the wires were not changed on ammeter posts from pos. ground to neg ground system. One of our tractors was marked with a sharpie + l - right on the dash panel instead of changing the wires. That was corrected pretty fast as was the ignition coil.
