Well over the weekend my old NH L555 skid steer lost all hydraulics and the first thing that came to mind was the splined hub(coupler) that bolts to the engine flywheel and drives the pumps. It was replaced with a new one from NH 137 hrs. ago and that's exactly what turned out to be. All the splines stripped out. I run this machine myself and never abuse it in any way. I tried to "E-Mail" NH but it would not go thru so I called the # listed on their website. I asked the woman if there was a way someone could do a "parts history inquiry" on the hub to see by chance there was a defect with it in the past. Well you would have thought I had asked her to fornicate. She eventually said I would have to take up the matter with the dealer I bought it from which was 3 yrs. ago. I told her that I wasn't aware that dealers manufactured parts and besides that dealer is now gone. I did call another NH dealer and was told I was wasting my time trying to get any help from NH. So another $380.00 down the drain. I did find a used one at a salvage yard for $250.00 which I thought was a little high. Sorry for rambling over nothing---just needed to vent

Is there anything special about the splines? I'm just wondering out loud if you could go to an industrial power transmission distributor and get one for about 1/3 of that. You are correct, NH didn't manufacture that part, and I'd tend to think 4-5 people had their hands, and mark-up, on it before it made it to them.

This is one good part about being employed in a machine shop. Long as you don't get caught. If you do tell them it's something for maintenance even though nothing in that plant is painted AC orange

Yeah after 3 years they aren't likely to do anything for you. Did the dealer replace the shaft on the hydrostat at that time? Normally that goes hand in hand with that job. I would also ask if you do alot of idling or mid rpm use with the machine. Most of the low hour failures that we see are more apt to be "light use" machines as aposed to more industrial machines that are wound right up all the time.

I'f second the notion of checking the male half splines.  All's it takes is a little wear, to harden the shaft, and them it forever wears out the softer part.

My god, did I actually say that??Wink

Yeah after 3 years there is nothing that can be done.  Their parts warranty is for six months.  We have been able to help customers out from time to time if it is common part and on a newer machine but in your situation I dont know of what can be done.

They do have to draw the line somewhere.  At least she did a back round check on the parts history to see if there was a bad batch of parts.  Most wont even do that.  I call those type "paycheck collectors" and there are getting more and more of them.

I also had a 555 NH Skid Steer, it's now owned by the family who rent my parents place.  It also had the same problem although I was thinking the splined casting broke loose from the plate.  It's probably been 15 years so I'll claim loss of memory.  Back then I think it was in the $200+ range.  Didn't replace the shaft but it is still running good and mostly run slowly.  Maybe I won't tell them to run it different since it's been ok so far.

HI, KY.Allis,  Who put in the new pump shaft. Did they replace the Drive on the engine flywheel with new bolts? DID they check  the rubbers for the motor mounts and the rubber mount on the Hydro pumps? Were the Bolts on the pumps tight. IF any of these were bad or any loose bolts, they could cause your problem. Were all the surfaces clean and smooth before bolting together? All of these things could have caused your problem.

NH built that model for John Deere.  I have put in many in the past. I worked for Deere from 1982-2005.

Maybe I wasn't clear in my original post. I'm not complaining about the price-this machine is 26 yrs. old and like our old AC's I feel lucky that parts are still available. And I certainly don't expect NH to give me a new hub or even warranty the old one ---unless there had been a problem with some in the past which is why I asked her to check some kind of part history but she offered no help at all. At least she could have transferred me to someone in parts or technical support but all I was told was to take it up with my dealer. The dealer where the machine was purchased new and the dealer where I bought the last hub are both long gone. The man that fixed it last time(3 yrs. ago) and took it apart Saturday has been a NH mechanic for 27 yrs. and he checked all the rubber mounts last time but said he would check them again. The splines on the pump shaft look fine. Last time  they were pretty darn snug on the new hub and still look good. I'm sure there is some wear but it looks good. One thing the mechanic did ask me is if I run it at full throttle which is the way it should be run . Well honestly I rarely have it at full throttle especially working in tight quarters. I guess I'm just old school. It just seems safer---kinda like idling down a tractor when backing up to hitch to an implement. Thanks for all the suggestions!!!

make absolutely sure you put that disc in the right way, we have an LS150 ive replaced that disc and shaft a couple times. a key thing is you MUST replace that splined shafts along with the splined disc. it will be worn enough to cause the problem prematurely. also make sure you Loctite and tighten the hydraulic motor to the plate to prevent coming loose, remember Im telling you this from experience. hope this helps. also FYI customer service from NH is useless as tits on a boar up here too

My L-778 stripped out the front pump splines on the loader pump, and it's a 7/8" -- 13 spline pump shaft and tube that goes thru the miter box and pump sticks on the front side by your heels!
Cant find pump or sleeve, and that was 6 years ago!---loader has FURD 172- diesel motor in it!---just TOTALLY re did the motor a month before the pump shot craps!
I have a L-775 that I wish I could get some help putting in a Wisconsin V- 465- D motor .--- got a near new motor for it just last year,--NOW to get it put in! thanks; ac fleet
