 Topic: Plow per acre per hour

Is there a chart that tells you guidelines for time per acre to plow? 2 bottom (Say 2-14) equals how much time per acre? 3 bottom....
Need to quote plowing a 5 acre field that was last done 10 years ago and has been used s a large garden.

43,560 square feet in an acre. 2x14 plow cuts 28" or 2.3333 feet wide so there are 18,668 travel feet per acre. 3.536 miles. So you get about a acre per hour at 3.5 mph.
3x14 does 2.357 miles per acre so at 3.5 mph about 1.5 acres per hour.
My MF-135 pulled the plow faster when I opened the main jet on the carburetor and ran it rich enough to produce a tiny bit of black smoke in the exhaust.

Just tell them X per hour, it takes as long as it takes... Soil types are highly variable, and if you've never plowed in the area, before, how can you know...

Lots of variables, how long are the rounds, lots of turning will really slow you down, back in the day when WD was newer we used to figure we could do 15 acres a day with 3-14 plow but that was a long day.

Thanks I use my D10 or my D12 with the 2 bottom to do gardens around the area, they are easy to quote. This guy threw me off wanting 5 acres done. I haven't seen the property yet. I can put the 3rd bottom on and use my D17 or 190 which should go much faster. He said it has to be 10" deep, no more or less. Don't think I can plow that accurate! I quote $60/hr bush hogging so I guess I could do the same for this.

10" deep? That's quite a chore for a 14 and even a 16. Why does he want it so deep? He'd be better off plowing it 5 inches deep and then using a chisel.

5 inches is stripping sod not plowing

10 inches around here you would get subsoil turned over. When we plowed years ago we went about 6 inches. Now we chisel plow and have it set about 12 inches deep and you can see the subsoil getting dug up sometimes. We had a offset disc for a while but the timing for having it was bad as the 4 years we had it the springs where just wet and discing down the corn stalks was just a smear.

I'd walk away without giving a quote you need a 20" plow to go 10" deep. Sounds like he needs a chisel plow. I did a 5 acre spot last year. It took me quite a while but the farmer I work for said just get it on your way back from the east fields. I had a heck of a time turning around a 36' chisel plow I had to fold it up at the end of each pass and turn around than unfold and make a pass the 45 deg angled passes were even worse. I think it took me an hour and a half. Normaly I covered about 5 acres every 15 minutes.

I just got rid of a Customer, this morning. When I started with him, he had a backyard garden, about 30X 20, used to use Kubota, and 4' tiller. then he downsized to about 30X 12, and was mad the price was still $150. Then he downsized to about 20X 15, and I did it with walk behind for $75. This year he "offered" me $50 said he was downsizing, again.
I told him my walk behind won't start, and is toast, mechanically. So I in effect "downsized" him... I aint wasting an hour of my time, for less than $75... |

Im guessing hes been tilling with a tiller and has hardpan at 6' and his top soil stops at 10" just a guess. Probably has rocks or clay below that.

Maybe he wants to make some more topsoil.Where my garden is I started with 0 inches of top soil after regular plowing, deep chisel plowing,adding old hay, manure, minerals,growing cover crops etc etc and picking lots of rocks I now have about 18 inches of the richest soil around here anywhere and a great garden every year.

Sounds like hard pan layer then ROCKS under that! I usually plow 10 to 14 inches deep here, BUT I have 6 feet of dark topsoil to work with! thanks; ac fleet
