Lacking a 3-bottom plow with which to give my WD45 a workout, I'm trying to attach my CA Pickup Plow to it. I need to move the round solid bar to which the lift straps attach to match the location of the WD45 lift arms. Apparently this is much easier said than done! I've loosened the set collar and applied both heat (MAPP gas torch) and a 5# hammer to the bar - nothing moves. Do I need more heat, a bigger hammer, or what? Here's a picture of the plow in question. I sure would appreciate any suggestions!

You appear to need to dissolve rust. Kroil is the best commercial product for that, better than PB Blaster. As an alternative that is reputed to be even better than Kroil is a50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. You can find acetone in the paint department of most every good hardware store and ATF in the auto department. If you put it in a spray bottle be sure its mostly metal because the acetone dissolves most plastics, its the solvent used for solvent welding of plexiglass.

The moldboards look like they need about 100 acres of plowing sand to get a polish. I have used an angle grinder with a flat flap wheel to put a good polish on AC plow bottoms. The metal is so hard that it doesn't grind nearly as easily as the surface rust.

If the plow is set up correctly for the CA then it's also set up correctly for the WD- 45. runner for a wheel all the way in. Remember the CA and WD 45 are the same width when the tires are in. The lift links going up to your hydraulic arms will be at an outward angle due to the fact that the CA hydraulic arms are 2 inches narrower then the WD 45. There's nothing you can adjust for that.

Thanks, fellows.

Gerald, I figure on letting the ground polish up those moldboards!

Dennis, I will have another look at how the plow is aligned with the tractor. It was fine behind my CA. I'm not (yet) concerned about the wheel spacing - just about having the plow drawing parallel with the center line of the tractor. As it sits right now, it looks WAY off parallel. If it's still looking off after I have another look, I'll post a picture.

When you plow take a sturdy scraper with you like a 5 way painter's scraper because every time you lift the rusty plow the rust will be covered with dirt that you need to scrape off to get the dirt to polish it. In fact you may need to scrape every 50 or 100 feet.

When I was growing up, most of our farm was heavy blue clay. You could plow acres and acres before the moldboards shined up. We had one hill that was sandy and they shined up in no time in the sand (and pulled a lot easier, too!).

A propane or acetylene torch with oxygen will get your adjustments a lot hotter than MAPP gas.

Thanks for the comments.

Here's  a picture of the plow mounted on the WD45. The lift straps are at noticeably strange angles. Shouldn't they both be angled out (bottom to top) about equally? [I moved the tires all the way in since this photo was taken, btw. Thank goodness for spinout rims!] I made a 50/50 acetone/ATF solution and am soaking the lift bar where it meets the hub. Tomorrow I'll get out the hot wrench!

They look ok to me. Lift it up and they will be straight.    MACK

Thanks, Mack. I did that. They're a little straighter, but the lift strap positions are pulling the beams so they are definitely at an angle to the center line of the tractor.

Is the plow supposed to be operated at an angle to the center line? Or will the beams straighten themselves when the bottoms are in the ground?

I went out tonight and took a few pictures of the #62 plow that I pull with the "CA".

Thanks,  Dennis. I'll check those dimensions on my plow. I gather that the distances from the lift straps to the beaming plates doesn't matter much as you didn't include those measurements!

Here is the last picture.

The lift links serve 2 functions.
1) raise the plow out of the ground.
2) level the plow side to side when in the ground

Before you go to the field drive the left side tire of the tractor up on a 7" or 8" block. Let the plow down and adjust the lift link so the plow is level. This should get the plow close to level in the field.
Thanks & God Bless

Hi Dennis.

Measurements for my plow were very close on the first two but the distance between the right beam and the center of the adjustable strap bracket was over 10" vs 8" as you measured. I applied the hot wrench this morning and was able to drive the lift bar a couple of inches, so now the strap bracket is positioned close to your measurement. Looks MUCH better hanging on the back of the tractor. Smile I adjusted the lift link as you described. One last task before trying the plow: I need to adjust the front wheels to track with the rears. Once I get that done, it'll be test time.

Thanks for your help - others as well.

While you're soaking everything else, why don't you put a good coat on the moldboards, etc.?

Dennis, I haven't gotten into the field yet! Too many other tasks on the Honey Do List today. I will certainly report back!

LeonR2013 - that's a fine idea! I'll do that and give the dirt a helping hand at cleaning them up.
