i learned it's a good idea to partner up with someone who buys it in quantity so you pick up there discounts. a few bags only purchased means u pay high retail.

Pioneer seed is kind of like john deere, You're either all in or not at all. I'm in the latter group. Dad liked it but we had some bad luck with it when I got involved. Also have a great dealer I get seed from that sells Dekalb, NK, and other things.

we had a local dealer who passed on discounts to the small guys; pioneer got really upset. We still plant it, as it seems to do well on my farm but would never have a bad word to say about other brands!

Not a big fan of Pioneer either. Have had much better luck with Dekalb around here.

For 60 bags of corn seed, ordered and paid for around the first of December, it cost me $238.12 per bag. That was for some above and below ground protection, and some above ground protection only. The more you buy, the bigger the discounts of course. I have never liked that practice, because it gives the BTO farmers an advantage, but most of the seed companies do it. For soybeans, i paid $44.85 per unit(140,000 seeds) ordered and paid for in February. That was one minibulk container(45 units). My father in law used to work for a seed company. He said that he came to understand why seed costs so much when he started working there. I guess i need to do that, because i think those prices are outrageous too.

I deliver Asgrow beans to retail outlets from Nov through end of planting. I haul ear corn from Dekalb seed fields to processing plant Aug-Oct. There are so many mouths to feed and machinery to support that is is unfathomable. The prices of seed are not that rediculus when you consider what it all entails not to mention genetic breeding and treatments applied. Just my observation. I figure the company should be able to make a profit too.

That's pretty close to the prices I paid early January. The Dekalb I bought this year was $233/bag, NK was $210, Asgrow beans $46. Small order, 25 corn, 65 beans.
