Got a petronix ignition and flamethrower coil a month or so ago from Tony's tractors and was gonna install it this weekend.   AFter reading the wiring instructions, I have some questions and want to know what some of you have done to wire these in properly.

Looking at the wiring diagram, it states to run the + wire from the coil to the battery or chassis.   The - on the coil connects to the ignitor's black/white wire.   The black wire coming out of the ignitor is supposed to go to the ignition switch wire.

Looking at the tractor, you have the wire that comes onto the current coil on the negative side, and then the positive side connects to the distributor.   That's correct because the tractor still has the generator on it, and it is positive ground.

This is correct, so the + side of the coil now goes to ground.   Just want to make sure that I am wiring everything up right before I put it all together and short something out and fry the petronix ignition.

You can get the Petronix system for + or - ground electrical systems. It sounds like yours is the + grond system (and the + terminal of the coil connects to the distributor). It has been a long time since I installed the + ground EI, and would have to look at it to refresh my memory; however, I believe you need to splice the - lead of the EI module into your lead from the ignition switch. Will run up and look at mine and get back to you.

That appears to be correct, Chuck.  I had to read your post twice to realize that you are running that tractor as positive ground.  Personally, I would have switched it to negative ground first, and then bought the appropriate Pertroninx for that system. It appears that you  have the correct system for what you are running.

Checked out my D15 + grd EI and original instruction sheet; I have the black EI wire to the - terminal on the coil. The red wire from the EI and wire from the ignition switch are connected to + terminal on the coil. Apparently my unit has different colored leads. The instructions that came with the unit were clear and installation was a breeze. Sounds like you are on the right track. You will have to re-time the engine after installation. I installed mine several years ago and am real happy with it; did'nt want to revise the electrical ground system as it was functioning just fine.

From reading your post Greg, yours is wired different then mine.   One wire is on one side of the coil, the other wire is on the other side.   The way mine is telling me to wire it, I should be grounding out one side of the coil to the positive on the battery or chassis(ground).  I just found it odd to be grounding out one side of the coil.   I might have to wait until Monday and call them to verify.   Doug, the reason I left it is the generator was all working and charging(after some cleaning), and I figured why fix something that's not broke.

Well, I called them tonite and that's the right way to install it, so the next time the D19 is in the shop, I will install it and let you guys know how it goes.

I have both of my gas tractors wired as 12V neg ground. Red wire from the module goes to ign switch side of coil, black wire on the other. From what I understand the module actually grounds through the metal bracket inside the distributor. Just be sure you have a module that agrees with the ground polarity of the tractor. Other thing is be certain your coil has the correct resistance for the module. I know 4 cylinder apps need between 3 and 4 ohms on the primary side. Any less than 3 and it lets the smoke out of the module. 6 cyl is probably different. Be sure to check first with a good digital ohm meter and don't forget to zero out the meter.
