What should I use for packing? Can I find it locally?
My luck with new assemblies is like my luck with new water pumps. They leak. I’d rather fix my old one if possible.
This one in particular is for a WD45 if it matters.

I get mine from the local plumber. That is if you are talking about around the shut off.

I just used teflon tape, rolled it so it was rope-like and packed the packing nut best I could and put the packing nut back on. 15 years ago and still holding....

Just did the same.
Hope it lasts but for now my $4.58 gas isn’t continually dripping away.
Felt tension on the shaft like it should.

I wound up buying a piece of graphite valve stem packing, and it has lasted about... 8 years now on my WD.

Well,I tried dental floss on a water valve stem where the old rubber was dried out and cracked. So far so good but then it's not gas.

Interesting topic.  This just happened to me on my WD this weekend.  I gave the "nut" a 1/4 inch turn and it was all fixed.  So, I must of "loosened" it somehow when I went to turn the gas off.

Yes, I unraveled a little of the graphite valve stem packing (bought at local hardware store) to get a smaller thread for that valve, it has been OK now on the WD for more than 20 years!
