Over on Sugarmaker's thread, someone said that if you saw off a maple branch during this cold weather you will get sapsickles.
Sometimes maples get damaged by wind and ice with the same results. 
I took this picture a few years ago.
I took it thru my kitchen window and its a little fuzzy.
