Looking at updating our current bushhog and looking at the 2615L and 2715L. Some of them have a deck ring, I'm not sure of the purpose. What are the advantages or disadvantages of the rings around the stump jumper. We would use it for levees, ditches, roadsides and waterways mainly. Right now we have a 1984 2615 and it's been a good hog, it's simply wore out.
Thanks

The deck rings were added to prevent rocks from being picked up by the blades and getting wedged between the stump jumper and the deck thus creating a round dent in the top of the deck that you may see on other bat-wing mowers. It is also suppose to stop tall grass and other debris from winding up under there, but it doesn't totally prevent that. It does not hinder cutting performance, just a safety and appearance thing. The newer the mower, the better the design. Look for the deck rings and "squarish" large gear boxes. Those are the best. Smaller "round" gear box models are good, but parts are becoming hard to get. 2615L or a 2715 are both good models. The 2715 is a little heavier duty model. Check for broken or welded hinges on the wings. Older 2615's were not able to be greased so they bind and eventually break. Also look at 1000 RPM models with the CV jointed PTO. Check for excessive wear in the u-joints and the ball joints. My family was a Bush Hog Dealer for over 50 years. We sold a few of these, and still use one on our farm.

Pre-WW2 A-C tractors on steel wheels...because I'm too cheap to buy tires!

Hea, hea, hea. Yes Jim, our hog has the wing's welded on, it's been through hell and back. Believe or not but dad turned it over cutting levees, he raised the wing for a stump and the wrong one went up. $1500 main shaft and he was back in business.
Thanks
