Just wondering about Orange or Yellow paint on AC dozers. Was the Orange phased out at some point or were the color choices an option.
For instance: AC Mel just brought home an HD19 thats orange. I've seen several HD19 on Craigslist, all are yellow. There is an HD11G for sale that's orange but, it might be a repaint.

If I paint a yellow AC dozer orange, do I get chastised from AC aficionados?

I was asking on this very subject here on the forum probably 2-3 years ago, you might be able to pull up the thread with a search. What seemed to come as an answer was that dozers and other equipment sold through farm equipment dealerships came as orange and yellow machines were sold at industrial equipment dealers.
Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. Previously- I 600,TL745,200,FL9,FR12,H3,816 LBH. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal!

My Allis road grader is of late 50s vintage, and it is yellow, painted over the top of orange. What I read about it, is that it was the first model of allis road graders that had the option of being painted construction yellow, or orange. Prior to that, orange was the only option. I would assume that dozers and crawler tractors followed suit. Darrel

Construction Equipment Division was formed in 1957 and changed to yellow paint around 1960, according to the Swinford book.  This seems right judging by the equipment I have owned.

Manual for Allis "Forty Five" lists only Persian Orange.

Manual for Allis "45" (Allis Australia) lists only Allis Chalmers Yellow.

OK to totally confuse you 
My 1955 HD5G is orange , 
a 1953 HD5G I had was orange over yellow 
A friends who had a 1952 HD5G - one of 4 the company owned - all were yellow 
Another HD5G I scrapped was yellow - believe year was 1954
The HD5B had orange as primary but both frame rails by engine showed yellow under the orange on inside of rails - outside was orange down to bare metal

I seem to recall that here in Oz that one state government started to demand that all their construction equipment be yellow.  And there went the individual firm colours and Cat's trading advertisment.

Tractor and Implement Colors

Caution: This list was assembled using three different PPG sources plus input from others. There was no information concerning model or year, except as noted. Use this list at your own risk. There are no guarantees. I have only confirmed the AC early persian orange, sometimes referred to as "persian #1", as 60080. Most of the codes should be available in most, if not all, current PPG automotive paint chemistries, including the economy OMNI line. See your local PPG jobber for details. I strongly suggest first purchasing the smallest possible quantity in an attempt to verify the proper shade. Custom mixed colors are not returnable. Unfortunately, whenever a color proper name has multiple codes listed against it, I have no idea which one is appropriate for your application. If you are particular about shade, you may have to sample them all. If you wish to get information on the different chemistries available from PPG, including technical data sheets (detailed usage info) and material safety data sheets (MSDS=safety & health info), go to the PPG website.

We are painting a 1956 D grader at this time. We are using national school bus yellow, which I was told by the former service manager @ Cooke Sales and Service in Chillcothe, MO was the correct color for AC construction machines. Light industrial used the PPG 81985, which our tractors are refinished in. I do have several paint formulas in another notebook that I can provide as well. I will also provide the Hentzen number for the yellow we are using on the grader.

I read in one of many AC books I have, I think, all ag tracked equipment was Orange, all others was yellow with a hard nose. But But But they could be ordered either color. My HD6G's have all been yellow but the last motor I purchased from Clapp Brothers came from a Ag cat and it was a higher HP orange engine.
