I have one and I never figured out why AC never put a series II decal on them. The D series had several series of improved models with different series on them. Of course the series III 190XT got its decal.

I believe Allis was embaresed and struggling to keep up with the 190 XT rear end troubles as they had to redo all the tractors in field and soak up all the cost- as this was a major problem, and the D series stuff was minor changes, 1 million dollars Ive heard was spent , and that was alot of money to redesign and fix things already out there they werent sure until the 190 XT series 3 that things were good- then advertise

The first go-round was completely changing the driveline from the intermediate gears thru the rear axles (with the exception of the Power Director clutch itself). Then, within 2 years of that they couldn't make a 2-pinion differential last any time at all, especially on a 5-bottom moldboard plow. So, once again the tractor went back to the Dealership to receive a new ring and pinion gearset and a 4-pinion differential. Even by the time the 200 came out the differential still was not all it should have been, until the 7000 and that one held up pretty well.

If a dealer upgraded a rear end, did a stamp of some sort get put on letting a person know it had been upgraded?

They are about 2-2 inch, placed on the outer edge of the axle housing, some are on top, some the sides, just depended where the mechanic had them turned

An official "Series 3" began at chassis s/n 23001 and up. Those marks may very well have been there before 23001, I don't know for sure. At s/n 9001 and up they have that larger diameter axle housing that may have had that mark on it and that sure wasn't a series 3. I say that chassis s/n 22999 had those marks on the axle and did not have the 4-pinion differential. The 4-pinion diff is the only change from the last of the S-2 to the newer S-3.

May I "assume" that this brand was installed with a welder ?? I thought you meant the "tech" stamped a few marks with a stamping tool

Well, now I'm a little confused, I read some posts that said an "upgrade" to a prior S III had mechanics "stamp" the marks ?? Or is it that the axle assemblies were part of the "inner" upgrades ? Thanks

That was worded wrong. The larger axles used the new style axle housings which are identified by the cast in pound # sign. Not too complicated.

If you are concerned as to whether your tractor has a 4-pinion differential or not, drain all the oil, pull the PTO shaft and get a small flashlite and look in the hole. At s/n 23001 and up the 4-pinion diff was STANDARD equipment. Many older tractors got a 4-pinion installed when their 2-pinion failed. How many ??? Thousands did, but as far as I know, there was not an authorized/recommended "mark" ever put on any older tractor that got updated. I've done a couple back in 1975/76 and my Bosses didn't tell me or do any extra "marking".

Out of curiosity, how long would AC warranty or upgrade the differential? Did owners receive notice by mail or was it only if a farmer had issues? My guess is they handled it like they did the 6060 crankshaft issue, not a word until a customer had an issue. Dad never received a bulletin of any type from Allis and he bought the 6060 new.

rear end and the large axles. Was that away when I bought it 40 years ago |

190/190XT's after s/n 9001 all had the large 3 1/4" axles from the factory. Large 3 1/4" axles were NEVER added as an "update" to any tractors under s/n 9001. Small 2 3/4" axle XT tractors were supposed to be upgraded to a harder/stronger 2 3/4" axle as a Field installed paid-for update.
