 Topic: On the hunt for an oil plug

I am in the process of changing out the oil in the MFWD on our 8070 as part of maintenance. One of the oil plugs is getting worn after 40 plus years with the 10MM hex head, and I want to put a new plug in. I have talked to Robinson Implement, and the part is discontinued.
I can't imagine the plug is hard to find in a parts store, but it is. A standard 1/2 plug won't work because of the threads. It looks to be metric maybe a 16m or a 20m but unsure what to try and order online. I plan on calling some salvage yards tomorrow, but wondering if anyone knows the correct part measurement for the two plugs in the front 4x4 housing on an 8070? I came across this part number, but unsure if it would work? 702-72-732

I would take it to the local hardware store and look at the metric bolt section... They have "coarse" and "fine" threads just like the SAE bolts.. Thread will be called something like 1.5 or 1.75 ... bolt can be 16mm or 20 mm..
That will get you the SIZE, then you can buy a short bolt and cut off what you dont need, or go online and buy a PLUG of the right size..

Have your auto parts store try Dorman products....At least you will get a size to work with.... or maybe start here

If it is a 10mm ALLEN wrench drive, that normally matches to a 20mm plug..
20mm is 1/32 of an inch BIGGER than 3/4 inch.

I weld 1/2" nuts to them and then a 3/4" wrench will take them out. If you do the one on the outside rim of the hub, you will have to remove it to take the wheel off.

There are actually 3 thread pitches for metric bolts. Standard which is like coarse SAE, then fine thread and then extra fine. Or at least those are the thread pitches that were common or semi common 20 years ago.
BTW I still hate metric because the differences are so slight just like grabbing a 10 mm wrench when it really is an 11 mm bolt head. It's not like the difference between 7/16 and 1/2 which is much easier to differentiate.

One nice thing about metric fasteners, is you can measure the diameter at the threads to determine what it's diameter is. I use the wide part of the caliper jaw to bridge across the thread peaks, and a 20mm might measure 19.8 or 19.9 and change. Once diameter is determined, now you can use other bolts like Steve mentioned and use a known bolt thread pitch to match the threads on, most likely a 20mm would be 1.5, 1.75 or 2.0 thread pitch. Knowing the exact size will then allow you to look at the auto parts store there's many replacement drain plugs for cars and trucks, many of which are metric.

Carroll Imp in Lu Verne, Iowa will have them. 515-882-3261 I drove a torx bit into one to get it out. Are they a metric bolt thread or are they a metric pipe thread? I don't remember any tapper. When refiling the final drives, the book shows a pic of the oil fill stamped on the side as level. I would say to leave them just a little bit low. When warmed up, the final drive builds up pressure and will start the big outer seal to leak. Been there, done that ,,,,,,, twice.

For those wanting to know the oil plug for the MFWD in our 8070 was M20 x 1.50.
Here is the link to what I bought if it helps anyone! ( DORMAN OIL PLUG) It was $4.28.
It fits like a glove!
