Can't find the 283730 p/n in the new AGCO part books, but the piston #230577 that he lists is a 8.25:1 piston. If you might want a high compression kit better buy it. Can't hardly find them anywhere else.

If you want the high compression kit you better buy it I was looking for this recently and it is discontinued across the board. I ended up with an over bore kit which is due to arrive Amy day now because I had ordered just before I saw this. If you want a 4 inch sleeve kit grab any that you can find reliance own powermax now and they only make the overbore.

Scary thing is no pictures of what's inside! Is everything rusty after sitting on the shelf for 40 years?

It's up to $404, Wonder what a good price for it would be? I could use 2 of them.

That kit will work for a WD45 engine, right?

It will fit in a 45. I just put one in mine. The question I have yet to find out is if it's really too much compression for the smaller 45 crank. I've heard stories about crank problems with M&W's and these probably put out the same or a little more power than those do.
I haven't got my engine back in the tractor yet. |

Ok, thanks. I'll not bid on it. I want to build a light hot rod down the road but no hurry, I'm putting together a stock eng. right now. |

Down the road you may not find another kit like this. Hopefully Reliance makes another run of these, but that would take a lot of orders, and not too many people want to pay an extra $300-$400 for a kit. Most people with a D17 order a D17 kit, they don't even think about trying to put in a 175 kit and there were only about 1000 175 gassers made.

I have a block (226) with 4 inch sleeves, just need a good hone, and 4 good flat top WD pistons. I might be ahead of the game just using the flat tops for a hot rod? All I would need is new rings. Just a thought, I'm a ways from doing this. |

When I ordered my kit the other day I asked what it would take to get reliance to make another run because I knew from this forum there was interested the official word I got back was when it was powermax that would have made a difference but reliance just doesn't see the demand and won't as long as the overbore kit sells well.

What are your plans for the tractor? I might look for a set of the 7.25 pistons from a d17. That would give you more torque then the flat top pistons and still run pump gas. As far as i know they would still have to be used. I might have a couple good ones out of mine not sure I had broken rings and I know at least one piston was burnt bad. Can't remember if the ring groves on the others where damaged or not. I know two of my sleeves where junk.
From what I read the 8.25 will require the high octane fuel you get at the pump or it will diesel. My 160 gas motor is like that. Edited by Dan73 - 20 Sep 2016 at 9:26am |

If you're wanting a real hot rod, you'll get more with a 226 and WD flat tops than the 175 pistons. Me, I was still looking for something to farm with too.
Too bad to hear about Reliance. I know they could sell the kits and make some money, but I suppose they figure they can sell the 7.25 kit quicker and easier. |

So you bid $500 and get the bargain of a lifetime. Who's going to stand behind this if something isn't right?

The one I'm building right now I want to be close to stock. It will be used for hay'n, raking, small baling, yard work, etc. The next one I'm doing I want to be competitive in stock appearing pulls some day. I have an over-bore (4 1/8) sleeve/piston kit for it. I just might pull the sleeves from the other block, get them checked/honed and use them with the 4 inch pistons. Or just use the other block and leave the sleeves in. Actually, that sounds like a better idea, I think I'll do that and save the other block for the puller.

be careful switching used sleeves and pistons. If there's any ridge in the sleeve, you can't have a ring from a different piston meeting or going past that ridge.

Powermax calls their 8.25 kit "LP / Hi-Octane".I know the 8.25 kit is (was) only available in 4" and the 7.25 kit is 4.125". I'm wondering how much the 7.25 kit (that is available for ~$400) would dyno less with the added cubic inches. There is also a little less stress on the crankshaft, rods and bearings with a little less compression.
I was the original bidder ($399) on this, but with all the variables; age thing, no warranty, rust/corrosion possibility and we aren't even sure someone hasn't carefully opened it up, robbed pieces and the kit isn't all there. (There's an old saying about buying a pig in a poke... - I like to be able to look at what I'm buying!) I guess I'm out. I was willing to take a chance ~$400, but I'm not that much of a gambler. It's up to $430 now and you know it will go crazy the last minute! I'll buy the 7.25 kit, have a little less power and hold onto my $$$! |

Not me, probably should have. Seller sais he would accept returns for 14 days. Hate to open the box and see worthless sleeves. Maybe if I had a tractor for them, but I don't. Just a someday hope.

Well Dave I am in the same boat. Not buying anything I don't have to have right now. Probably regret it someday there is a d17 I think I could get for a decent deal right now but I have to let it sit and hope it doesn't go anywhere. I have one gas d17 and I really need to focus on a diesel for next tractor. The diesel of my friends I have used this summer while my d17 is getting a motor job has saved me a ton in fuel. Something I keep thinking about how to trim the fuel costs and maybe make a little money for all my labor. It is really hard to make any money with these old tractors and a small farm. Right now if it just pays the bills it would be progress.

Considering the 160 kit cost for my 15, it was cheap enough. Box is supposedly unopened and in good shape. My mechanic talked me into buying it....nothing ventured, nothing gained. We'll see I guess.
